Diagnose these plugs....
« on: August 14, 2008, 06:58:19 AM »
i have pods and a 4-1 exhaust from an F model.
These are the plugs before my carb rebuild. Bike ran rough, but ran....

These are the new plugs after trying to get bike to stay running (it still won't)

In deeper than I should be...

Which F model do you have? If it is the 77/78 then the white plugs are probably SLIGHTLY lean but the other plugs are going to be rich. If it is the 75/76 then the white plugs are certainly too lean and the others are only slightly rich.

What throttle position are these readings from?

i have a 78k (with F carbs apparently) The first set is from when i got the bike. it ran and rode but roughly. lots of hesitation on throttle and a lot of blipping the throttle to get it where it needed to be.

the second set are from my trying to get the bike to stay running after the carb rebuild. full choke and almost always full throttle to even get it to run for 30-45 seconds. any lowering of the choke at all and it died.

Probably needs the standard full carb clean including pulling out the slow jets and cleaning them with a copper strand.
The left side plugs are too rich, the right side are too lean.

The plugs with color do indicate rich conditions but that would be expected with a prolonged attempt to keep the bike running on two cylinders with choke applied.  Problems for sure with the clean two; likely carb issue rather than ignition since they are not a 1-4 or 2-3 pair.  Check for fuel in the carb bowls and if ok proceed with a proper idle circuit cleaning . . .
