rectifier upgrade
« on: June 21, 2008, 07:31:59 AM »
I did a search like a good boy.  But it seems that all the threads have disappeared.  Any one got any ideas on how to upgrade a 76 cb750f to a solid state voltae regulator and retifier?  will one off a gl1000 or gl1100 work?  How do I hook it up?  thanks.

I went with a 3 phase rectifier purchased from digikey mounted on an old cpu heatsink-  see this thread for something similar.

I used an automotive solid state regulator.  I can pull the part nos if you're interested in going this route.

Also switched out to blade fuses at the same time.

I have a solid state regulator purchased from this fellow

It is just a reg, not a reg/rec combo so you keep your existing rectifier and install the regulator in the same location as the stock one.  Works very well and not crazy expensive.

i hooked one of these up

I put it where my stock fuse box wasd and moved the fuse box under seat.It took a little wiring magic. It uses only two wires to the regulator because it shares the ground with the rectifier. I used a two prong wiring plug in place of the blade to blade found in the stock regulator on my '76 cb550. The heat-sink and good craftsmanship sold me too.

May have a change in plans.  Happen to have a good reg/rect combo from a GL1100.  It has the 3 yellow stator leads, a black 12 volt lead to the ignition switch, 2 green ground leads, and 2 red/white leads that go back to the battery.  This info is from the factory service manual wiring diagram.  My question is this...the white wire on my cb750 rotor is just a 12 volt sensor wire.....triggers the magnetic field to start the charging process.  I can just hook this up to any black wire on the bike....right?    This is the only question as the reg/rect comco IS a Honda part and going on a Honda bike....and the wire colors match on both schematics. Will keep updated.

The white wire on the SOHC4 alternator controls an electromagnet in the alternator.  The regulator drives this wire with voltage, thus controlling the alternator output strength.

You need a regulator that provides this function.  From your description, it doesn't appear the GL1100 R/R has this capability.  I'd guess the GL has a permanent magnet alternator.
