Rewiring the bike
« on: August 14, 2008, 05:39:33 PM »
Anyone rewired their bike before? I have thought about taking on this project strictly to clean up the bucket and I know I don't need half the #$%* that is on the bike. Honestly, I plan on keeping the headlight, taillight, turn signals and thats about it. I doubt I am keepin the tach or speedo even. Obviously I will be keepin the essentials battery, ignition, etc...

What I am trying to find out is exactly how deep I am getting myself in....

If you have some good wire in enough different colors not to lose your mind, it's a pretty easy project. Only take an afternoon to get it all together. You didn't say what kind of bike you have so don't assume there is a lot of wires to lose. If it's an early bike, the wiring is almost as simple as it can be right from the factory. The 74+ 550s and I'm sure it was similar with the 750s, become a bit more complex.

Like, you could convert the front turns to single element, eliminate the dummy lights and gauge lights, but that's about it really. That's not a whole lot of loss.

I guess in general how comfortable are you with adapting a wiring diagram and actually cutting, splicing, etc the wire? If you had to ask this question I'm going to guess not very.

If you've already worked on your electrics a bit here and there and understand how the system in your bike works, I would say go for it. I will be doing it over the winter most likely if I can get enough wire.

I'm definitely doing it over the winter too. And since I'm going with LED lighting all around, I'm going to drop a few gauge on the wire too. Easier to hide!  ;D
