Exhaust gasket
« on: August 14, 2008, 05:13:03 PM »
I'm replacing the exhaust on my 1973 CB750. I started putting the right side together last weekend. I didn't see the old exhaust gasket before I had put new ones in and torqued down the exhaust insert thing (whatever you call it).  Then I started reading more on this forum about exhaust gaskets and decided I probably didn't look hard enough. Sure enough, when I looked closer on the left side exhaust the gaskets were there.

My question now: can I reuse the new gaskets that I put in on top of the old gaskets on the right side? Do I have to get new gaskets?  Cost isn't a big deal of course, but I'm just anxious to get this back on the road.

Thanks,
Rob

The copper gaskets are hollow and crush when tightened.  If you got 2 in there they are really crushed now.  Order some new ones and when they get there replace it the correct way.  Go ahead and ride the bike until the new ones are here.  You do not want to have an exhaust leak there as it makes the motor do weird things.  Don't feel bad, the old ones are very hard to see with all the carbon on them.  Good luck with it.
