750 marks its territory
« on: September 07, 2005, 07:38:45 AM »
I have this 1972 CB750 that my neighbor gave me.  Got it running, and split riding time between it and my shiny 1976 CB750 this summer.  Over the holiday weekend, I was planning on taking the 72 to the lake, given the price of gas.  But, it wouldn't start.  Pushed it back into the garage & took the truck instead.  Came home and tried to start it again-no luck.  Pulled a plug and confirmed that I had spark, in at least one cylinder.  Put the plug back in, turned the electrics off.  Didn't turn the gas off though.  Just forgot, I guess.  Then I started to tinker on the seat lock problem, and didn't make any progress with that either.  Now it's about 15 or 20 minutes later, I'm reading a book & listening to the radio in the garage, when I hear this weird noise, and smell gas.  The bike was marking its territory.  Just a little puddle, then it was all done.  I got up & turned the gas off, but couldn't see where the puddle came from.  It was right under the transmission, not back where the carb bowl overflow tubes empty out.  Strange behavior, to say the least.

Is it possible that one or more of your overflow tubes is too short or has a crack in it somewhere near the middle?  This may cause the overflowing fuel to run down the outside of the transmission case rather than through the tube and out near the swingarm where it's supposed to.

Funny  this topic should come up right now. I got the old girl (K0) on the road the first day of summer. Carbs were thuroughly cleaned (twice  >:() and float levels set to 26mm with a sliding "T" ruler. Did some tweaking and finally balanced the carbs recently. Actually, running darn good and put about 600 miles on her with no problems.

Took it for a ride just this morning and it was a bit boggy all of a sudden. Stopped at a rural church parking lot to look things over but found nothing out of the ordinary. Unfortunately, the parking lot was dirt and gravel. It wasn't until I got home and rolled the bike into the garage I noticed a pool of gas under the rubber drain tubes. Since they were bundled, couldn't really tell which one, or ones, were "marking their territory." Pulled the tubes and turned on the petcock. Turns out it's #3. Tried tapping the bowl in case the float was stuck, no luck. I looked back on the driveway and there is a nice trail of fuel spots. Must have been leaking and flooding all during the ride. Ugh, now I have to recheck the float height, which means taking the d_mn carbs off, which means probably having to resync them. I do hate carbs..I really do!  >:( >:(

That's why I'm avoiding the job, for now at least.

Sure, I'm quite capable of hating two different sets of carbs.  ;D
