Resurfacing cylinder head.
« on: August 30, 2008, 01:29:05 PM »
Is it possible to resurface the cylinder head by sanding it using incremental grits of sandpaper an then buff it, the same way you would the engine covers? Would it not be precise enough? I'd just rather do it myself than shelling out 50$ to a machine shop, if possible.

Thanks!

You can remove gasket material with various mildly abrasive techniques but what you really want is a clean shiny surface that is also perfectly flat.  You are not going to achieve that with normal tools and sand paper.

I need to remove some scratches I made when I was removing the old gasket, hopefully they will come out with the sandpaper. Thanks!

Only have a machine shop re-surface your heads. This will be a few bucks but will save you headache in the long run... Replaced your head gasket with a good Veshra gasket.

scratches wont matter much you only really need to have it skimmed if warped

$50 doesn't seem to bad for having a head resurfaced, you'd probably invest more of that in time and supplies doing it yourself, if it was even feasible.

I totally agree. I have seen early CB heads .010 warped. I have seen one GS1100 head out .020. I'm not a fan of Vearah head gaskets though.
