Gold Paint inside case?
« on: August 19, 2008, 08:20:43 PM »
Is that really just gold colored paint all over the inside of my cb750k case?  I am curious since I was stripping the paint off the lower case half with paint stripper and I got a couple drops on the gold stuff which promptly bubbled up and peeled off.  Is this going to be a problem, or should I try to patch it, or just strip it off and get it repainted?  Or is this golden coating even necessary?

Varnish from Fuel and Oil......not paint.

Ya might have to settle for a polished finished  ;D

Stripping the paint right now to get a look at what's underneath and decide whether or not I want to try polishing that bad boy ;)

i don't think that it is varnish... first look i thought it was gold paint and i thought nothing of it.
i can go look again but i don't think it will do much good... it will still look like gold paint.

i think it may have been a primer coat or something.  ok, maybe i will go look.   ;D

Well when the stripper hit the gold stuff it sure bubbled like the paint.  Although if it is paint I am curious as to why it's there?  I'd think that paint inside the motor would just be asking for trouble.....however, I'm no expert here.

The varnish theory sounds good however everything is coated with a nice evenly applied layer, which seems strange to me if it is a bi-product of the oil being in there.

time for pics :)

Pics

Here's where I spilled and was worried about it

Although I didn't even notice before that when I hosed the stripper off the case I seem to have removed all the gold stuff from the bottom half of the case on the inside, so hopefully it's not too important

Here's the gold stuff on the top half of the case

So are we still thinking this is varnish from the oil and that it should all be stripped out??

Note the lack of uniform color.....

Some of it is more golden then other bits.....

Sure looks like varnish from oil to me......

I'll take your word for it :)

The more I keep going out and looking at it the more the varnish idea is making sense.  Note this is my first rebuild and first time in a motor like this so this is all new to me

As always, your input is greatly appreciated!

Well, think about it.....paint INSIDE an angine would be a bad idea where nothing good could ever come of it.
It's a discoloration of the metal due to years of oil and heat.  Carb cleaner would probably work at removing the discoloration too.

Depends on the age of the cases, some of the early ones, diecast and sandcast, were painted by Honda as the castings wernt perfect and some were found to be porous

Clear lacquer on the inside of the case?  That seems like just as bad of an idea as painting the insides.

They actually do make paint specifically for the inside of engines.

But that gold stuff in yours aint it
