License plate stolen!
« on: August 16, 2008, 05:42:00 AM »
I ride my bike to work in downtown Ann Arbor, and park in the free motorcycle parking in the Ashley/Ann parking structure.  It's a popular homeless hangout.  I came home last night, and while I was in the garage noticed that the plate was gone!  I retraced my route, just in case it came loose and fell off.  I didn't see it.  I then went to the police station (2 blocks from my office) and filed a report.  So, if you see a Michigan license plate L417N, it used to be attached to my K6 750.

You did the right thing by filing a report with the police.  That way if anything should happen where your plate number is associated with some crime, you're covered (usually).

Seems to be a lot of MC plate thefts going on in MI lately.. A friend of ours had hers stolen off of her bike a month ago.

I attach my plate with one each hex,  slotted and Phillips head bolts, all with different sized nuts.  For the fourth hole, a zip strip!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Pop rivets are also a good solution. They are a PITA to remove, but won't vibrate loose and likely won't be removed by the casual thief!

Does it mean that if I want to commit a crime with my vehicle, I just have to file a report a few weeks prior saying that my plate was stolen?  ;D

It's a popular homeless hangout.

Is that information relevant? Do you know for certain that it was a homeless who stole the plate? Or should we just guess it from the comment? What do anybody want a license plate for? When I was a kid I used to steal car badges; now I know that bad karma will fall upon me and somebody will steal my car badge sooner or later, but stealing plates when you can buy them real cheap.... could it have been some kids?

Here in CO you need insurance to get the renewal stickers for the plates.   We had a few plates cut to get the stickers.

I've got a master lock on the lower right corner of my plate for this very reason. My dad has had two of his plates stolen. Rather not have to deal with it.

In NY like most States in the lower right hand corner of the plate you attach a sticker. Mine is up to date so it says 09 which means the bike has been register through 2009. Each time you renew your vehicle registration showing that you have Insurance and Inspection. If you were to steal a plate and put it on another bike, to the Police it would appear that the bike is currently registered. In other States they have the same registration sticker on the plate also.many auto plates get stolen for that reason in those States. In NY the registration sticker is on the windsheild so stealing a plate in NY would only be useful for commiting a crime.
We use tamper proof Torx screws at work, after reading this thread I may use a set of those to mount my plate.

In Spain, plates are related to vehicle, not owner. When you transfer your vehicle, the plate goes with it. The "sticker" in your plates is what in the UK is known as "tax disc", and here it also a tax but it's enough if you carry the payment receipt with you and show it when requested.

Law-enforcement officers can check in their database any vehicle plate, and the database will tell them what make, model, colour and who the owner is. The only cases I can think of using fake plates for commiting crimes has been in terrorism -car bombs- in which the terrorist put fake plates in stolen cars, but the plates are the same than another same car that is perfectly legal. Police would check for suspicious cars to check the car plates, so if the make and model match, it won't raise any alarm.

Over here, if you want to have another plate -say yours was stolen, lost or damaged in a crash- you need to show your title and they make a record to who and when has ordered another plate. I don't know whether those pieces of paper are transcribed to electronic form, and I have sometimes being "trusted" and had plates made without showing title. So I guess it is not that hard to have another plate made. Over here, burglars won't waste their time stealing the plate; they will steal the whole car, commit the crime -or use it till it runs out of gas- and then steal another one.

I have no idea what anyone would do with a stolen motorcycle license plate.  It's a different size than a car plate.  Different letters/numbers coding.  And, now that it's been reported stolen, if someone has that plate & gets stopped, they'll be charged with possession of stolen property.  I think at most there were 10 hours elapsed between the it being stolen and my reporting it.  I guess that's long enough to do something bad, right?

I really can't see the point of stealing a car plate to commit a crime. I can understand a souvenir hunter or a collector stealing a plate for his collection -let the time pass by and once the tag has expired, it is legal to sell them-

If I plan to assualt a gas station, I would not take my car with stolen plates, that's for sure. I would just steal a car and assault the gas station before the car owner reports it stolen. If I get caught I can always say I found it that way.

About why they might steal motorcycle plates:  maybe they're just cheapos that don't want to renew their own registrations or more likely, have a record with the law.  And they still want to get around, so they steal the plate off of a similar bike.  And cops, percentage wise, probably aren't riders.  So they wouldn't know the difference between a black '72 750 and a '75 Z1 w/ the badges off.
