Purple Haze
« on: August 16, 2008, 03:23:52 PM »
Hey everybody!
I've been riding a lot since I got my 67 Guzzi running but I was forced to sell it to buy this Chopper. The PO said her name was Purple Haze and that she had been in magazines back in the day.  All the pinstriping on the bike is real gold leaf! She is an 836 with a Drouin supercharger. The forward controls were custom built to go around the blower and she has dual Hurst Airhart calipers up front and the PO was trying to engineer a shovelhead caliper out back. She was disassembled 12 years ago to up the compression from 10 to1 up to 13 to 1 but never reassembled. I don't know jack about supercharged bikes but on turbocharged cars the compression is less than a naturally aspirated engine. I would think that a blown 750 should be less too, right? Anyway, I have to go clean the shop in preparation for Purple Haze's resurrection.
Later! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

how much did this beast cost ya..???
and i think you dont wanne go to a 13 to 1 compression on a blower motor, unless you would like to feel a cylinder head slamming against your body.....

I paid $3500 for it. I got all the parts to put it back together and the bike has a title so I can actually register it. I've seen the blower setups sell for $2500 on feebay so I figure I paid the going rate for the blower and got the rest of the bike for $1000. After a little surfing last night I found that 10 to 1 is the highest compression I can run safely with the blower, so now I have a brand new set of 13 to 1 836 pistons I don't need. I got the original pistons too so I'm going to take some measurements and see if they are usable. Since the PO didn't cover the engine while in storage the crankcase has dust and straw and mouse #$%* in it. Looks like I'll be pulling the engine to split the cases. I don't think I can flush it good enough by pulling the oil pan. :P

should keep an eye out for the mag the bike was featured in. i'm sure it would make a great article in a current mag.

You can probably machine the pistons to a saner CR.

Also you can run without the blower, those seem to have their share of trouble.

Check out the bottom end, no sense in  having to wish you had later..

i'm sure you could get a pretty penny for the blower, could even finance the rest of the build

That may happen. I pulled the blower in preparation for the engine removal and found that all the bearings are bad and the upper geared pulley has eaten itself along with the housing a little bit. No damage to the impeller, but finding new bearings and seal might be difficult.  On the other hand, it's probably not worth much with loose bearings and a scarred housing. I guess I might have to become a Drouin blower rebuilder, dang it! :'(

So I read in another thread that you had this bike together and running. I'm curious to hear what a supercharged CB750 sounds like post some vids! Also Amen Savior frames are the bomb diggity.
