hello from des moines, ia

about a month ago i got my first bike and it's a 76 cb550f.  it came with a disgusting fairing, but other than that i was very happy with it.  i rode it the first 2 nights i had it and i loved it.  everything seemed good and then on the 3rd day it didn't want to start.  so i changed the spark plugs, filed/cleaned the points, changed the oil, got a new oil filter, and cleaned the air filter.  it started after that, but it didn't seem like it was running right and was just pouring gas out of the carb overflow tube.  it sat for about a week before i tried to start it up again and it wouldn't start so now i'm not sure what to do.  i really like the bike, but i'm not the most mechanically inclined person.  i wouldn't mind selling it if i could get close to the amount of money i've put into it, but that may be hard in its current condition.  if i can't sell it then i'll probably attempt to fix it up myself.  either way i think i'll end up with either a cb550 or cb750 and i'm sure i'll have a lot of questions for you guys so thanks in advance.  i've got pictures of it here

Hi and welcome from another newboy.

If petrol is coming out of the carb overflow then it just might be something simple like a float is sticking. Quite a common problem, especialy if the bike has been stood a while. If you don't feel up to having a go yourself then have someone look at it for you.

550's are great bikes and I know once you have overcome this little problem then you will have a great time on that bike.  I used to have a 1977 550 K3 and went all over the place on it. I loved it!!

Good Luck

WOOHOO, more Iowans ;D ;D ;D  Welcome to the forums, this is a great place to be, lots of knowledgeable folks who can usually talk you through any problem you have.  Do use the search function because a lot of problems have been dealt with in the past.  I spent the first 7 months or so reading because I couldn't come up with a problem that hadn't been discussed. ;)  But if in doubt, ask away and someone will chime in with some good tips and advice.

thanks for all the replies.  after reading the forums the past few days and seeing how much great information there is here it's made me feel more confident in trying to work on it myself.  thanks john, for the compliment on the bike.  for some reason those pictures make it look way better than it actually does in real life   :)
