Replacement side covers, what to buy?
« on: August 18, 2008, 08:14:50 AM »
I have a CB750H2 that needs side covers, they were missing when I brought the bike home.
I am going to have to buy the side covers and as I see it I have three alternatives.
1. Good used eBay (Prefer OEM but gun-shy of misrepresented goods)
2. CMSL overseas new repos. (Price is high with the euro/dollar thing plus shipping is high BUT look like high quality and attach like originals.)
3. The much cheaper repos that attach with screws. ABS plastic I believe.

Please, share your experiences buying replacement side covers. Thanks!

Whats a H2? and go to

http://stores.ebay.com/L-P-M-Plastic-Motorcycle-Parts

to buy the repros direct, which are excellant quality, more flexible than original and only need painting/badges

I didn't see any covers for the CB550F on the ebay page. Anyone know if the CB500F side covers will fit the 550?

I have the Maier (cheap and pretty high availability) covers on my K6.  I have not painted them yet.  They will be on my "second tier" bike as soon as I get the LPM repro's from over the pond.  Now the hard part - which bike becomes 2nd tier.....   probably more related to cosmetics than mechanical..... ahhhh, good problems to be pondering.

The Maier's are certainly better than my busted up originals but I would call them 2nd tier and from what I've heard about the LPMs, I'm convinced I won't buy more Maier's any time soon.

550K up to 76 are same as 500, 550 77/78 are totally different as are 550F BUT remember its a UK company and all 500 were designated 500 F(our) and ran till 76 as 500K2, we never had any 550 K till 77 and that was the K3

Whats a H2?

it's a 2 stroke CB750, duh!

I just purchased a set of LPM's a month ago and they're great. very durable and exact replica's.

I just bought a set of those ABS ones from a company in the US. and I'm happy with them. seem durable enough. although you have to drill the holes yourself, but it does come with the hardware.

Wasn't that a 2 stroke Kawasaki?

Hate to horn in ....but does anyone know who can supply repro side covers for a CB650, 1980 model? The two suppliers mentioned don't carry them, and most of the stuff I see on ebay is pretty sketchy .....

I just ordered my Maier (sp?) sidecover repo's from jcwhitney a week ago.  They're super easy to fit and look killer!  I replaced the "stock" hardware with some stainless socketheads and it looks killer ;)  They are definitally worth the extra dough.  I was skeptical about them at first (wasnt sure how they were going to look), but the 100 quid definitally came out worthy ;)

Here's a couple on our local NZ trade-me site.
The 450 is quite beautiful and is on $1 reserve so will go cheap as.
Might just buy it for the shed wall. ;D
The 750 is set at $100? they don't look that flash and has a matching right hand side also $100!
Obviously prices vary to extremes for these things.
Good job my 650 came with spares he he. ;D

I guess these are the LPM's but I got 'em last year from David Silvers for about $50 each and had 'em painted.

I got the meiers and While they do not look completely original, they work extremely well. Of course they are not going to look completely stock since they SCREW on, I find it funny how people are such sticklers on their side covers. I LIKE the screw on feature. If I were to buy those LPM's, I would cut off the nubs and figure out a way to tap them to screw on. Nothing like having to buy sidecovers at $100 and then still have to paint them just so a person can come by and in 10 seconds, yank both off and run.

Sorry I am a little pissy as just last week, some a$$wipe came by my bike and yanked the end cap off my right handgrip. So now I have a cap on one side and not the other and everytime I ride, I can feel it missing. Yes I can get new grips and no they are not that expensive, it is the fact it happened. It happened in broad daylight, on a college campus NOT in session. And it was not in a parking lot, it was further on campus. So I guess I prefer hardware that stays on through mild tampering.
Not everyone carries a screwdrivers in their pocket!

May not have been so bad but on that same day when I found that, I also had a flat tire. So imagine how pissed I was to find both at the same time. I had to spend the next 4 hours changing a stupid tube in a parking lot.

One bright note is that, I was going to change the rim strip when I did this as the one in the tire was at least 7-8 years old. That will not happen until I have no choice!  I do not have a "normal" rim strip. I have a piece of rubber that COMPLETELY fills the inner area of the rim so the surface is flush with the main areas of the rim. The strip is about 1/4 inch thick and is still very pliable! This is a REAL rim strip!

Sorry, I'm still kind of confused. I have a 1975 CB550F. Are there any other years/models where the side covers would fit my bike?

Thanks again,
Scott
