Carb Leak on a '75 400F
« on: August 20, 2008, 07:19:48 PM »
So my CB400F custom/resto completed in Feb '08 and has since seen approx 800 miles of road with out as much as a drop of gas outside of the carb. My issue is and forgive my ignorance is for some reason one of my carbs seems to be leaking. I noticed this while the bike was at rest in my garage sitting on the center stand after about a 20 mile ride. I've read in one of the forums that the over flows at times can crack and cause a leak. I'm not sure why the carbs would be fine one day and with out any physical contact, suddenly start to leak. Also, I would imagine that with the petcock turned off, eventually the gas would drain out of the carb and the leak would stop. But this isn't the case.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Chris

It's possible you may have gotten a small piece of trash in the float valve which is causing the leak. Maybe shut the petcock off, drain that float bowl and then turn the petcock back on. Hopefully that would wash whatever got stuck away.

If not, it could be that overflow tube decided that today was the day to crack and leak. You could solder it or replace the bowl.

I've read (and experienced) that the floats will wear themselves a spot on the pins and stick down causing a good leak, but that's usually from a less than full bowl from sitting. I've never had that happen right after a ride.
