RIDER UP
« on: September 08, 2005, 07:28:31 PM »
One of my riding buddies fell a couple of months ago riding a mountain trail and broke his leg in two places.  It's called a radial fib-tib.  Not too big of a deal except that he's 72 years old.  Here's a picture of him yesterday.

BTW--my wife is an RN on the orthopedic floor of a major hospital here.  I sent a copy of this photo for her to post on the bullitin board....  :-)

How true.  ;D Glad to see he recovered.

I started back riding this year after a 22 year break. Frankly, I was a little apprehensive that first day, since I'm one of those old farts. It really is like riding a bicycle, you never actaully forget. Sure you have to get "the feel" back, remember you don't have self-canceling signals and reaquire that unconcious gear counting ability you use to have. Interestingly, I have found that in addition to the just plain fun, getting back on the bike, and riding, is a good mental excersize. After years of commuting in a car, you get complacent. You're fairly well protected (sure you can still do stupid things), you have all sorts of conveniences on-board, but you can, and many folks do, drive a car about 50% engaged on their good days. On the bike, 50% doesn't cut it. You have to be on your toes constantly. Eyes checking every driveway, crossroad, etc. I guess some day I will get too old for it, I don't relish the thought. Maybe when it happens I try a trike.  ;D

Hey Bob, 22 years without a bike? What were you in for, murder? Ha ha, Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

The Ambulance and Fire truck whipped by my place this morning. That dosn't happen very often around here.  By 11:00 I had heard the Island scuttle on it.

Guy on a bike went into a corner just a bit to HOT!

I went by the corner on my way to the marina.......man,...... he drifted right into the gravel and into and over the BARBED WIRE fence surrounding the Sheep Farm. Yes we have sheep here as well. That corner is such a hoot, but you have to watch for the gravel

I heard later in the day that he was all f***ked up. Broken collar bone, broken leg, some internal injuries and a mess of barb wire cuts.   :-[

Nah, they were probably #$%* scared of you Bob, they probably thought that if you could take out an Aussie (ever though she was more than likely a Kiwi) on your own, you were way too dangerous for their jail, ha ha! (or mebbe just too old and smelly?) cheers, Terry. ;D

No such thing as too old.
Pommie Len Vale-Onslow (made his own bikes in the 30s & 40s called SOS, means Super Onslow Specials) stated that he was going to ride one of his bikes up the steps of Buckingham Palace to see the Queen when he turned 100 yo.
I know he died a few years ago, could any of you English Gentlemen stop shaking at the thought of Shane Warne and let me know if LVO made it?

Not to derail this thread, but the other day going to work there was alot of cars stopped along this windy, back road. When i drove slowly past i saw a downed bike still smoking, one lone shoe in the middle of the road, a tree freshly snapped in half, and a deep gully with about 10 people looking into it. The acciedent just happened, no emergency vehicles onsite yet. No one could find the guy. He had been thrown so far that people were starting to venture into the forest to look for him that was way beyond the gully. Scarry stuff, of course if was a crotch rocket bike, looks like he was racing and hit a curb that threw him into a tree, snapping it in half before he continued on flying about 100 feet into the forest.

I'm always amazed at the fact that you always see shoes at crash sites, off the victims? Bike crashes, car crashes, always the same, shoes come right off their feet! We all know how hard it is sometimes to get shoes ON our feet, but they don't seem to have any trouble getting OFF our feet in a crash. Weird................. Cheers, Terry  ;D

Took some photo classes in college and one of the instructors was a stringer for the local newspaper.  He had a collection of photos he'd taken at accidents with a shoe prominent in the foreground.  He said the same thing--there is always at least one shoe.

When the guy in the picture got to the emergency ward the first thing he said was "Don't cut my boot off!"  They gave him a pain killer and pulled it off without cutting.

Having been there, I'm laughing. I'll tell you something- if he got what I got, pulling that boot off felt really really good! That stuff takes a while to wear off, too.

It still amazes me how many people think they "know motorcycles" because they managed to ride a friends bike around the parking lot one day.  I sold my younger brother my first bike, a 74 cb350f several years ago with the understanding that he needed to take the safety course and get his liscense first.  I was on the road alot with the band at that time and housed my 2000 Shadow ACE at his place when I wasn't riding it.  He decided to take my helmet (at least he got that right) and take the 350 for a spin around the neighborhood.  The roads there are mostly crush-n-run and a little asphalt.  First corner, going about 35, he lost the back end and dumped it in the ditch.  Luckily he had the helmet on as it caught the rock and not his head, but he twisted the bike up pretty good and the helmet was trash.  I still haven't helped him get it back on the road.

Come to think of it, I think he might have even said that his shoe came off...

Now that we have actually derailed this thread.
Not only is it amazing that shoes tend to stay at the point of impact but...
zip-up boots tend to up-zip AND stay at the point of impact

I've seen several bike accidents where the boots have up-zipped and stayed in the middle of the intersection.
Amazing.

I've also had a very disturbing email of the pile of bits that was left after some poor bugger trashed his bike and himself.
Hit a tree at Godonlyknowshowfast and he was in about 20 pieces.
