Did I just ruin my fork????
« on: April 24, 2009, 05:56:12 PM »
I have a 73 CB750 and I wanted to clean and replace the seals on my front forks.  Following the Clymer manual I disassembled the top and then dumped out a bunch of water??? and nasty oil.  When I attempted to remove the bottom allen bolt I clamped it and gave it a good crank.  I thought I loosened the bolt, come to find out I didnt, "the bottom pipe component" was just spinning in the bottom case.  I found this out after I jerked the tube out of the case and saw it spinning .  SOOOOO...... my question is, did I just ruin my fork??? Or can I save it?  I did some searching but did not see a previous post, any help would be greatly appreciated, I am learning as I go, thanks in advance.

Hi! I don't think you ruined it, the tube is just turning with the allen head bolt because the bolt is threaded into the bottom of it. I used some long needle nose vise grips and carefully clamped them to a side of the tube and then held the vise grips while I loosened the  allen head bolt. Hopefully your bolt is not in real tight. The other method is to stick a piece of broom handle down there to immobilze the tube from spinning then loosen the bolt.
Cliff.

Well thats just great!  Should I be looking for some sort of tab that broke off in the case? or is this a common ball buster.  That bad boy is in there pretty tight so we shall see.  Thanks for the insight, I really appreciate it.  I thought it was a gonner for sure

No it is fine.  The bolt will always spin if you take the spring and guts out first.  If you can put it back together with the spring and top fork bolt back in you should be able to spin it out.  If not, guys will measure a broom handle to put in there in place of the spring and tighten it down to hold the pipe that lower bolt is connected too.  That keeps it in place while you unscrew that allen bolt.

An impact gun is very effective.

Well I am happy that it is not ruined.  I guess the manual was wrong, at least I can do the next one the right way.  Thanks for the tips!
