A little over sized clip-ons concern
« on: July 24, 2012, 08:03:09 PM »
Hello guys, I went to a motorcycle Junker last Saturday and purchased a pair of clip-ons that came off from a 96 Yamaha. They are 2 mm bigger than my CB500 fork (35mm), so I was thinking in using some kind of bushing to make them fit. My dilemma how safe is going to be with this adaptation???
Any thought?

shims... others have used 'em. I haven't...
If you can make them tight enough that you can't move 'em that should be good.

I  think the question you have to ask yourself is do you want the possibility of your clip-ons doing the shimmy when you are pulling a ton?

You'll be fine. Clamping force is massive with most clipon arrangements. Adding another clamped interface shouldn't be an issue. Make sure that whatever you use is polished very smooth, is clean, malleable and not kinked when you wrap it around the fork tube. Aluminum sheet is a great option. Don't worry about getting a perfect fit either. In fact, for aesthetics, you might want to trim the shim a little thinner than the clamp surface of the clipon. The frictional resistance will be the same.

A polished surface will result in much better and more consistent friction than a rough surface.
