Grip suggestions
« on: August 21, 2008, 12:21:00 PM »
I am changing the bars on my CB500 K0 to CB400 bars and I am plan on changing my grips at the same time to get rid of the peeling 70's 'waffle' grips.  These are the most uncomfortable grips I have used.  Can anyone suggest some nice grips and where I can purchase them?

Thanks,
Steve

Try to get gel grips, not the cushy foamy ones but the rubber ones with the gel filling.  They give good feel, control, and are inexpensive at CycleRecycleII in Indianapolis.  Order on the web, the phone is always busy.

+1 on the gel grips.  Pro grip has a nice line-up of choices. Vendors will change depending on what country you live in.

Here's Parts Unlimited catalogue. Not all grips are shown online so go to a MC shop in the US to get best selection.

I rather like grips that increase the grab diameter.  This gives a better mechanical advantage to overcome the return spring, and create less fatigue holding the throttle open.   Like this style...

The cushion is nice, too.

Cheers,

The ones I just got from Pro grip, the ones I can't find in their online catalogue, are very similar to those you linked to TT. They only taper on the switch/control side so there is plenty o' meat on the outside to grip and roll on the throttle. Definite plus for lowbar/clubman bikes where your weight is on the palms :)

I second progrips. I have some and they are nice. I think they make gel ones too. If you can, check a local dealer. If all you are buying is grips, online might actually cost more with shipping.

I have been looking at those. How well do they fit your hands? I have kinda wide hands so I need something that keeps my hands on the grip and not hanging off.

They fit well.  I have rather large hands if I do say so myself, and they don't feel small.

I have the ProGrip superbike grips, and I LOVE them.
weird thing is they look nothing like the ones shown above... maybe they are Gel Superbike's or something like that.

here they are:

http://www.progrip.com/default.asp?tip=2&ite=gri#top

Oury's are nice too, but vibration damping with the ProGrips and some bar ends make my clubmans livable again.

I was looking at a set exactly like those at a local bike shop. Didn't note the price, though; $65 for a set of grips seems kinda steep...

they were 49.99 when i got them a few years back , i first got the ISO pegs ,then the shifter and brake pedal, ..... had to complete the set ::)

there only downfall is at 1/2 throttle and over, the rubber pads aren't on your palms anymore , but not a big deal to me , my bike is more of a function follows form type ride

Steve,

Not sure if I'm going to help you out or not.

I've got a set of Gran Turismo grips on my bike and they're comfortable.  They're basically smooth on top with some sort of cushion underneath.

I've got the black ones and they're relatively cheap.  They've got a good vintage look to them as well, IMHO.

I'm going to third TwoTireds choice of grips.

I have an old pair I got off of a parts bike made in Italy. They are nice and thick and comfortable. They also look the vintage part well.

If you are trying to take grips off without tearing them up, use your air nozzle to blow air into the grip where it goes onto the bar. It puffs them up and they just about fly off.

I have Rizoma grips in natural aluminum. I like the tech look. And I wear gloves for added hand comfort. And I think they look really good with my aluminum bar end mirrors.

Is that 30 or 60 for a pair?  The site doesn't ask you L or R if you specify one grip.  Could a quantity of 1 mean a pair?
