anyone ever see a cb650 with a sportster seat
« on: August 19, 2008, 06:31:13 AM »
I like the sportster seats dont want to buy one on ebay just to put it right back on.....I know I may need to modify some stuff but dont want to change the top of the seat at all....wondered if anyone had see or knows of how close it is to fitting or what would need modified...I know the 4pack had a badlander sportster seat on it but the frame of the cb650's is a little different. any info. would be awesome.

Not yet.  I found that I have stored the stock Sportster seat up in the rafters of the garage.  I need to move some things to get to it.  What I can tell you is that the Sportster seat has a plastic pan and attaches at 2 places: a post/notch up front and a single bolt through the fender.  The seat pan is not made to support the riders weight but flexes so that the weight is spread across the bike frame.  I will get the seat down in the next 60 minutes and take some pics.

No problem.  Ok, now I am headed to the garage.  Just finished applying on-line for a job (lost mine a week ago last Monday).

Thanks for the good wishes.

Ok, here are some pics:

Here's the Sportster seat sitting on the '81 650 custom frame.  Not too bad looking.

Here's the rear fender bolt mount.  Might work.

Issue #1: The Sportster frame is much more narrow than the Honda.

Issue #2: Because the seat does not rest correctly on the frame, there is no support for the sides of the seat.

Here's the bottom of the 2 seats.  Notice the rubber pads on the 650 seat that contact the frame and the rear steal cross brace that bolts to the frame.  The Sportster seat does not have any rubbers because the seat rests on the frame for the length of the seat.  Also notice the keyhole notch near the center.

These next 2 pics show how the Sporster seat hugs and rests on the Sportster frame.  Even the oil tank and left side cover help support the seat.  They are both made of steal.

It would take many mods to the seat and the frame to make it work.  Maybe there are some guys who have done it.  I'd love to see how.

$69 ain't a bad price.  New seats from HD range from $200-$400.

keep up on this and let us know the verdict, I bet with some good ol cardboard templates and thin guage steel or aluminum you can make some small seat pan brackets that will adapt it quite well. I would like to do this to my 750, that sporty seat is nice lookin.

That's what my Sportster is (4.4 gals is on the customs) and the seat that I took pics of.  One idea I had was maybe you could make cuts in the plastic seat pan say 8 to 12 inches long starting at the front of the seat.   This way you could flex and spread the seat to fit the width of the 650 frame.  And then reposition the front hook so that it is off center like the stock 650 seat.  Or build a complete sub pan that makes up the gap between frame and seat.  Good luck!

yeah this is gonna be interesting....I have an idea of splicing the original front cb seat pan to the sportster seat....after cutting the new...70.00 seat....man I was debating to sell it and buy another stock seat. it will either work and I will have a one off seat that will be awesome or I just cut up 70-100 bucks...because I am sure that seat will be worthless once dr jeckyl starts cutting it.

if the foam will look half decent over the cb650 front I think I can make this work....guess I will just pull the trigger and see what happens.
