Brakes - heat up the sqeak??
« on: August 22, 2008, 12:22:44 PM »
Hello pals,

This is my first vintage bike. 1974 CB350F.
Its neat.

One problem. I dont know if it can be fixed or if its normal.

I ride 10-15 minutes. When applying the front brake..it squeeks.
I touch the disk. Its very hot.

Brake pad has a lot of meat left.

Why is this happening?

if your brakes get hot after hard braking it's normal. remove the wheel and check if the piston isn't rusted in the caliper.  maybe it's always touching the disc and gets hot. mine was.

after changing pads to EBC, my brake still squeeks, so i don't bother.

If your disk is getting hot without applying the brakes, you may have a piston that's not retracting fully.  If this is the case, you should pull it apart and give it a good cleaning.

When you re-assemble, put some copper-grease on the BACK of the pad where it touches the piston. This helps to stop squeak.

The pads on my 650 were squeaking, so i put brake grease on the back of the pads, and now its good.
