Tank painting question
« on: August 25, 2008, 08:18:16 AM »
I've got a tank I'm repainting for a CM400 and was wondering, what's the best way to get a "metal" look to the tank? I was planning on painting it matte black but when I put it on the bike after it was stripped I really liked to way it looked. I know I need to paint/protect it somehow. Ideas?

I was thinking about some kind of clearcoat, didn't know if anyone had tried it before/had any luck with it.

the only prob you might have is if you keep the tank smooth(polished) look and try to paint clear over that, you might have an issue with adhesion and a modifier might help with adhesion, I will check with our painters and try to post a tip before I leave work today.

If you go for a "brushed metal" look you should have no problems with adhesion.  Mirror-finish polishing would be a problem of course.  The original finish on the engine side covers was a brushed finish with clear coat.

If you spend some time searching (might have to spend a lot of time) there was another member who posted good results (with pictures) of his tank cleared with the POR product.  It looked darn fine.

Ok talked to the painters, we use mattews paint systems here and with painting metal surfaces clear and not scuffing the metal before they have to use whats called "spray bond" and spray on it before painting the clear, it wil give the mechanical adhesion needed. I'm sure there is similar products for dupont and other automotive applications. You could probably call a dupont paint store in town and they could tell you what you need to use. Oh yeah I saw your Pm and I am located across the street from the valero gas station, its called Dimensional Innovations, two buildings east of the overland park tow lot. ;D
