750 K0 front sprocket cover.....unique to K0's?
« on: August 22, 2008, 01:13:01 AM »
My K0 came missing the front sprocket cover, I thought I'd just swap the one from my 73 K3 before a ride recently, only it wouldn't fit, and looks to be clearly different. The guard on the K0 prevents a proper fit. Does anybody have any insight as to when this change was made or what bike have a cover that will work for me?

Here's the 1970 K0

and here's the 73 K3

That parts shows up in the K0 parts diagram. As I recall, it was a band-aid for the early chain jumping problems related to the tiny front sprocket (which led to the demise of many a sandcast case) until Honda upped the size to improve the chain wrap (and subsequent wear).

Factor in also the fact that the cases were redesigned between K0 and K1.  Later guards won't fit, and finding a K0 guard in good shape is rather a challenge.

I too was trying to mix n' match some parts between bike models a short while ago and I got this invaluable advice from DustyC:

"Cross reference here:  http://www.cmsnl.com

You have to register.  Search the fiche for your bike to find the part numbers you're looking for.  Search by part number will give you your cross reference of other bikes that part was used on."

So you have to know what is the part number of the cover, enter it and if it's the same on any other bike it'll say which bike.

Hope that helps

That guard is not used on all the sandcasts, it came out after the start of production.

I don't think the case guard was used on any sand cast models.I recall it being offered to owners for free, with a new cover with milled surface to sandwich the guard between the cover and case. These bits became available shortly after I bought my K0 in April of 70.There was a flurry of upgrades and recalls shortly after my purchase.New throttle cables, slides and springs, the case guard, and a new set of exhaust pipes due to premature rust perferation.

Pretty sure there was a start serial number in the partsbook , when they started putting them on..

anyone know if you can use a 17T with it?

I've got one of those things on my K6 engine, I presumed that they were an optional Honda item, I haven't checked my K0 to see if it's got one. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I found on my K0 that the original cover would not work when I installed a o ring chain, the suppore post beside the screw hole would catch in the sprocket. I had to remove the guard and replace with a later cover.

Good point...I did install a 17T front drive sprocket on my KO with the O-ring chain.  I got my sprocket from Yamiya for $35 as I wanted to keep the same design.  The after market sprocket from Honda did not have the thick ridge on it.  And you are correct, that sprocket cover and my O-ring chain hit the support hole shaft, but there is no need to toss that cover.  I just used the Dremel to grind a little of that shaft out and put it back on.  All is well...

Terry, there were also aftermarket ones made..

Oh, ok Frank, but it does look exactly like the one in my parts manual, so maybe the PO of my K6 "retro-fitted" it? Cheers, Terry. ;D
