Here’s how I heat my shop. Just outside this wall, I poured a small pad for my upright compressor and a 40 gallon, electric hot water tank. The tank (and expansion tank) has an extra insulation kit, plus is over wrapped with an old sleeping bag. The circulating pump runs liquid/anti freeze mix (designed for this application) through three loops in the concrete floor. A thermostat in the middle of the shop, calls for the circulating pump to come on, whenever temp is below 50 degrees F. But, clock/ timer only allows the pump to actually run between midnight and 6:00 am, when we are off peak, at the lowest of three daily hydro charge rates. I figure it adds about $100/ month to my bill December thru’ March. I usually go down to the shop in the am, because it does cool down during the day......

Ingenious!

I have one in each out building, always greasing one piece of equipment or other. Usually there’s a filthy old rag hanging from the top!

The shop is kinda full at the moment. 8)

What tractor is it?

It's a 1976 Yanmar YM1300D 4x4 2 cylinder diesel with a reversible 13hp 3sp PTO. It came with a Yanmar tiller that bolts directly to the back of the transmission and is operated by the 3pt hitch. I've had it since 2000 and it still surprises me with what it can do. I got it from Japan, it used to work a small rice farm before I got it. I'm the second owner.

That bucket loader setup is pretty trick, and the concrete weight too. Was that built from purchased plans?

I haven't been able to get into my shop in years, so I do most of my work in the patio now. My 94 year old mum gave me some money for Christmas, so I added some more and bought a new Vevor AC/DC TIG and a welding table and welder trolley. I only unpacked it last week and haven't fired it up yet, I need to buy some tungsten rods for it, and then teach myself how to use it. ;D

New welder and chipper 13 January 2023 by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

That looks nice  8)

I haven’t switched it on yet Bill but the Vevor welders get really good reviews with lots of Youtube guys so I’m hoping it’ll do everything I ask from it. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thanks, I built the concrete counter weight and a friend built the loader and bucket.

Nice!  My neighbor has one too.

I have an old Kubota, over the years I built for it some implements.  Like a watering solution using PTO pump or plug aerator.

Tore into a broken Branson Ultra-sonic cleaner this am. Belongs to a buddy that stopped using it when it went “silent”. Started by cleaning off a thick layer of grunge (his shop looks much the same). I have no idea what 1/2 the controls and printed boards are for, but quickly determined the wind up timer switch (also acts as on/off) is fried. Jumped it out and the tank came to life. Well marked, four pole switch, German made. God bless the Internet, one on order! Might be able to clean a full rack of carbs one day soon! This thing is 5 X the size of mine.

The search for a house finally bore fruit and a contract was signed on a very nice house just outside Battle Creek with 5 rolling acres, an attached garage and 2 barns. Temporarily my girlfriend agreed to share the attached garage with me because the pole barn that will become my shop is very raw. A prior owner of the property had horses or other livestock, so these are actual barns. My shop will be built out of a 28x40 building. But right now one side is open to the outside and it has a dirt floor. The property itself is just beautiful. The seller loved to garden and planted flowers and fruit trees all over plus a couple of food gardens. He is also a brewer and so there are hops vines in one garden.

Congrats Danny, looks gorgeous.  When will you move there, this will keep you quite busy...

The closing should be sometime in the next couple weeks. The seller already moved out and we are just waiting for the appraisal to come back. Laura's job is fully remote. She will start by being there a few days a week, but I full expect her to transition to full time when her lease is up at the end of the summer. Unfortunately my job is not remote, so I will need to be here in Chicago at least 4 days during the week. I think my employer will be OK with me working remote on Fridays, so the likely plan is to be at my apartment M-W nights and then drive up to Michigan after work on Thursday.

My weekends for the foreseeable future will definitely be busy. The house is in great shape and really just needs the gutters cleaned and some minor maintenance. The two-story barn near the house is also in pretty good shape and just needs minor maintenance. The larger single story barn where my shop will ultimately go will need a lot of work. It needs more power (it only has a single 30A circuit right now), insulation, a concrete floor, some grading around the perimeter, a 4th wall. and some roof repair. It is very likely that I won't get a concrete floor installed until late in the fall. Budget comes in to play here. Laura is buying the house, but I have to finish out the barn myself so it has to fit into my budget. Realistically the shop isn't likely to be done until about this time next year. But I am going to do as much as I can myself and have some fun building it to exactly my specs.

Thanks. Yes, the property will be lots of work, but my girlfriend is the gardener and is really excited to tackle it all. We are currently shopping for a good used garden tractor, and by good I mean expensive. She wants 4WD and power steering. Her budget would pay for a nice K4-5 without the 341's. LOL. Lawn wise the property has a lot of woods and ravines where you don't need to cut. Using the county GIS to map it I estimate less than an actual acre of lawn that will need cutting.

On a small tractor 4WD is very important, especially if it has a loader. As my tractor mechanic buddy says "Kubota's are homeowner specials". He sold me my 76' Yanmar YM 1300D 23 years ago after he put a loader on it. It even came with a factory tiller that mounts directly to the back of the tractor and uses the 3pt to raise and lower. The older small models don't have power steering.
Smaller John Deere, Ford New Holland, newer small Yanmars and a couple of other brands are good products.
I use mine all the time. Today I loaded two large diesel motorhome tires into the truck with ease.
