i just have to tell you guys what i overheard...

1) "BMWs are supposed to be the best made motorcycle aren't they?"

bla bla bla...

1) "isn't yours a 1000?"
2) "oh no, its a 1200! yeah, it'll pull 0-60 in 2.8 seconds"

1) "wow"
2) "yeah, i really show up the sport bike kids when i can scoot past them in the corners and they just don't have the experience to keep up."

2) "i've been getting 70mpg even though i've been riding it really hard, and you know... those sports bikes only get about 35."

This all came from a young buck salesman that never acknowledged my presence and his older than the hills recent customer (bmw rider) in for service.
all the while, i sat there, reading my Motorcycle Classics magazine article about racing cb160s and dreaming of the day i'd race my cb400f.

and also knowing that my sportbike... gets 50mpg thank you very much mister high on the BMW horse!

oh, and guaranteed i could walk all over him, any canyon, any day.

see, i can talk it just as much as he can.

70mpg is prolly a bit much

Unless he rides like a granny till the sport riders show up...

But seriously...it aint hard to show the kids on sportbikes up.....they do generally lack the experience.....

I had this co-pilot once....didn't think his 650 ninja twin was fast enough...so he bought a 600gsxr...

well, i'm the type that felt the need to talk up my experience in order to buy the zx7r from the guy that didn't want to sell it.
i had a buddy die on the same bike.

what do they always say? with respect, comes power. i do respect it... i flaunt it

... but, i DO respect it!

the next day, after my offer.. he called back to say that he would accept it, just to not sell to the 2 first time riders that were offering money as well. $:-\$

... dad's era... but, mine too i suppose $:-\$ weird how it all overlaps and you can't make out the difference... i've seen it all on reruns. not to discount it, at all, but that was during my childhood.

K1200S will do 0-60 in 2.8 with a Pro rider.
70mpg, no.
It'll flirt with 50mpg on a good day
It's a f*ckin' fast bike, with 167 stock at the crank, 150 at the wheel.
It's a hoot to ride...but I like crusty old bikes a lot better. (much more character than any new thing)

BMW's do not get good gas mileage unless they're idling when you push them off a plane.

That beemer did do about 170 or so at Bonneville..

So it is geared high, and if you took it real easy it may get 55 or more.. but it is a well bit bike at a price much higher than a Japanese one.. it may actually get oK mileage taking it easy..

Nobody said the Salesman BELIEVED him, he just will agree to everything the gauy says as he wants to make a sale..

Re: kghost and old guys: At a rally parade here in town a few years ago an out-of-place little homebuilt Honda took its place among the HD's. When everyone reached the new Veteran's Memorial Park that was being dedicated I wandered over to where this little thing was parked, took a couple pictures, and waited for the owner. An older guy (well, younger than me but still somewhat over 30) turned out to be the owner. We talked for a while, he recounted racing stories, how he hated to see the checkered flag because it was just so much fun to race. About then everyone was firing up their HD's, getting ready to leave. Lots of throttle blipping, loud pipes and not a few disparaging looks at the little Honda. One rider in particular gave the impression that he thought it somewhat of a sacralige that such a bike was allowed among the lordly bikes surrounding it. My new acquaintance donned his helmet, gave the little bike a short push, dorpped the clutch and the bike fired. Behind him the offended HD rider's expression changed from one of disparagment to one of amazement and alarm, he exclaimed, "Holy s&#t" and nearly fell off his bike as the megaphones blasted at him. The lilttle Honda's rider turned out to be Marty Paulson, a nationally known trials rider, and classic road racer. And the little Honda is a hand built, truly high performance 250cc race bike.

You just can't judge them (relatively) old guys by their age and looks.

A friend of mine that is 60+ has ridden more bikes than I ever can or will, yet his favorite bike is a 250 ninja that he took all the stickers off, put nice tires on and upgraded suspension. I copied him and that bike IS a blast, plus it WILL get close to 70mpg lol.

I still can't keep up with him...no matter what I ride lol.

I just love those pipes on that bike.

Are those factory cr pipes?? Does anyone make still them? My Superhawk should look so good some day.

Miles per gallon be dammed if it looks that good.

I believe Marty handbuilt the pipes, or had them built. Most likely did them himself.

my buddy bought himself a brand new 1100 shadow few weeks back....
he got cocky about it on the instant he showed up with that thing......
right away my bike got down graded by him for just being a old piece of rusted bolts,while before he bought his shadow,he loved my bike,for what i made out of it etc..(1980 cb650 bobber,jockey shift)..

it irretated the hell out of me,that he got so cocky about his bike being way better etc.. but i kept my mouth shut...
about a week ago,he had his shadow in for the first service and they told him it's broke in,give her hell....

so the next day him and me went for a cruise on our bikes,it's a sunday,nothing to do,lets burn a few tanks of fuel kinda day...

so,we are taking some secondairy roads,and i can see he is just giving his bike all it's got,speeding away from me,dropping back down to me,speeding away etc.. just showing off the "power" of his bike..

till we came to a highway.................

we stopped just before the highway for a smoke,and then he made the mistake of telling me as often as i wanted to hear it,that his bike was so much more powerfull then mine(up to that point i had just let him do his speeding up thing,and didnt react to it)

that got me pissed off,but i didnt say anything,,just thinking to myself,i'll get you on that highway..

well,we got back on the bikes and drove towards the highway...no on ramp,just a right turn to get on it..
we had to wait for some car's etc. before we could go on...

well,long story short.....there came an opening for us to go on the highway,and i just redlined my poor old bucket of rusted bolts trough all the gears,never letting off the trottle while shifting..just slamming it ...

when i hit 5th gear i looked back....he was way behind me.!!!...

that day he tryed several times to drag race me,but never won....

from that day on(it's only been 5 days ago)..i keep telling em the same thing he was telling me before that day...every chance i get....

have to admit it surpriced me that my 650 could beat him.....i guess never underestimate a old cb..they are fast....

What gets me about these BMW (and Harley) types is that they are all talk, and they seem to think that their bikes are so fast. Funny thing is though, these bike never seem to be able to win on any type of race track against any Japanese bike.

Hrumph. Well not being "anti" any particular brand of motorcycle, I also own a 1992 BMW K1100LT. It WILL get 50+ MPG all day with my 260+ pounds, and (as you'd imagine) with a fuel injected DOHC 4 cylinder engine, excellent suspension and Brembo brakes, will kick any SOHC4 out of it's way, even with 100,000 miles on the clock, and probably another 100,000 miles before it'll need any engine work. (it's never been apart)

The modern K's, across the frame 1200cc beasts with computer controlled everything really are incredible bikes with Hayabusa like speed and remarkable handling, while offering excellent fuel economy, and of course, unsurpassed German build quality.

The old "boxer" flat twins had an excellent racing history from the 1920's to the early 1980's (a BMW R100S won the "Castrol 6 Hour" endurance race in 1977 to the amazement of Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha) then of course there was the multiple "Paris-Dakar" off road endurance wins, "Boxer Cup" series, BMW's return to road racing in 2007, and of course BMW are re-entering the WSBK championship next year. BMW, baahhh huummmbug!

My buddy's (there I fixed it

gave us nothing but grief yesterday. About 170 miles out too!
We pulled the petcocks, checked all the wires and finally decided it was in the kill switch.
It backfired and spit till about 15 miles to the house, then it was round up a horse trailer and haul it home.

I am in the process of writing, "Motorcycle Karma" since this same bud was in front of me on
a ride not to long ago when the duck spit the fuel line off the pump in the tank. He thought I'd gone another
way home and didn't turn around to see what happened. Now I have pictures of his breakdown with proof that
I didn't skeedattle and a picture of him in a horse trailer with bars on the window begging to be let out,
he'd gotten a bit sea sick.
