K0 Ignition switch repair
« on: September 09, 2005, 02:26:34 PM »
My 750 K0 ignition switch has suddenly become intemittent. Sometimes it work & sometimes it doesn't.

Can I take it apart to fix it, or is it sealed?

Thanks

David

I was able to fix my intermittent ignition switch. I think there are folding tabs on the back that hold it together. If you break them off you are done for. Don't lose the steel ball or spring. I used scotchbrite to polish the contacts and a little grease to prevent corrosion. I also had a problem at the round connecter, one of the pins didn't line up too well and would get pushed out the back of the harness connecter. All's well now since repair.

Thanks. That's what I need to know before I take it off the bike. I have to wiggle the key a LOT to get it to work on the days it decides to be difficult.

there may be a broken connection under the protective rubber boot. I'd check there first, before you crack the switch housing open.  I was able to re-solder the broken contact, after cleaning affected areas with steel wool and tinning flux.

Kaysystems, It is a very simple mechanism, the actual switch is below the cylinder. When I picked up my bike, it had no key, while I waited for a new key I took it apart and just turned the switch. The lock is a seperate component so it you have to wiggele the key to turn the key, you have another problem which is the lock tumbler.

This morning I took the switch apart. The lock mechanism is fine. The plastic plate inside that rotates is deformed. Looks like some of the contacts got hot & melted the plastic a bit. Soon smoothed it out. The plastic plate also has a guide pin that locates in the end plate (one with the wires on it). Well the guide pin was broken off.
All repaired now, but I think I'll pick up a spare.

Thanks guys for your help.
