Good on ya for avoiding the vicadin. Good for your wife for being able to change the dressings. :-)

Man oh man, you're bringin' back memories, It's amazing just how sensitive you fingers are eh'

I mangled two digits about 9 years ago when I dumped an XL185 and my two fingers got caught behind the clutch lever......... I too had a nurse change the bandages, but I have a low pain threshold  ;D

All the best for a full recovery,

about 20 years ago now, I took off a 1/2" of my middle finger on a ships jointer.
Of course with it, it flat topped it and off the tip went into the dust bin never to be
seen again. I had ridden my bike to work that day and thought I'd just ride it back
after I got it stitched up. After waiting 3 hours for them to stitch me the pain had really
set in (I guess cutting of the end or your bone on a finger does that). Anyway, it was the
clutch hand and there was no riding home.

Glad to hear your fingers are still with you. Hope all continues to go well!!

all the best for your hand....

i'm also taking out the splitter soon,i will be a warned man...here's how i split wood>>

I just got around to watching the video, and that splitter is an impressive machine.  Just a good, old fashioned hazardous design.  No sissy guards to get in the way and slow you down.  Stay alert, or lose a limb.  I dig it.

Yeah....when I dropped that split rim on my foot,I was only a couple of hours into my eight hour shift. I was in so much pain that I had to go home. I had to ride my bike home about 25 miles and it was my left foot so shifting was a major beatch.By the time I got home and got my boot off,my toe was already swollen & turning purple.Next morning, went in for xray and pain pills. They said I broke it and would be laid up for 2 months.Nail fell off a couple of days later. I don't wish that kind of pain on anyone.

It sounds like you and I had a similar experience as far as pain.  I've got a high threshold, and don't like pain killers and the pain didn't really come until several days after.  I thought maybe I had an extended shock.  I found that the pain killers are a necessary evil.  Maybe just use them when you know a dressing change is coming up or when the pain gets bad.  All in all, I'm glad I had them.

I hope you heal up soon.  You should be good to go with the clutch, if it's really stiff, a new cable will really help.

Man that's a bummer.  Hopefully that's all.

I kept my thoughts positive with thinking of how Tommy Iommi lost his fingertips and still rocked with Black Sabbath, or Django Reinhardt's hand was burned and disfigured, but he still rocked(in a 1940's kind of way).  I thought of more, but can't think of them at the moment.  Where there's a will there's a way.  Has anyone ever made a throttle type of clutch mechanism?

Best wishes for the next doctor visit.

I have fairly short fingers and the first joint of my left ring finger is useless. The good new is you will be able to work the clutch. It takes some practice but using you wrist you can grip the lever with your first two fingers and start the pull and get it to the second joint of the ring finger and pinkie tip to get a hold of it. I can shift as fast as anyone. You will find a lever position and way of moving your wrist to compensate. Best of luck on your healing. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GIVE UP. You adapt and overcome.

Heal Quickly.

Michel, that is bad news. I'm so sorry and am guessing that you're feeling crushed. I would be, but it sounds that you are holding up. That's good. I do pray that Friday brings good news. We all know that you're gonna make it through, and you'll be riding again.

I hope it won't be too dark to add this, but I lived next door to a guy who had one arm and rode (a Harley). This was during college and long before my riding days, so I never got to know him. You will be back on the road, but you might have to make an adjustment or two.

I use 2 fingers to work the clutch most of the time.  Just get a new cable and you will be good to go.  No worries man.   Besides, there is always jockey shift.  It looks cool, and in your case it would actually be for function rather than form.   ;D

well the pain has gone down. last set of drugs (darvocet?) gave me hive-type reactions. so, onward to other newer drugs that numb the nerves. a bit scary, but...

the damn fingers keep getting jambed/struck almost every day resulting in  bloody dressings/cursing/jumping up/down etc etc. this makes changing the dressings harder, because the blood has dried by then,  but i'm starting to ignore the pain and it is getting better.  :(

I am looking into buying some new cables. i know the one i bought from partsnmore was a piece of junk, so may go to the honda dealer instead. it will be interesting to see if he has the same cable manufacturer.

peace,
michel
