done riding 4 this yr, maybe
« on: August 24, 2008, 01:31:52 PM »
squashed 2 fingers in log splitter. not much left except bones. ugh!

what happened? well, i was moving/reaching to move the wood on the splitter,
slipped, and braced my left hand on the wood,, to not do a face plant,
meanwhile, my belt loop caught on the on button.

hopefully they won't have to amputate them monday, as it is also the 1st day of my new job.
i am sure i'll still be able to operate mc clutch w exercise, someday. ???

new employer (vermont country stores) said they'd find something for me to do. ;D
peace,
michel

Oh, man, Michel. I'm so sorry to hear about it. It sounds like a freakish accident. I pray that all goes well on Sunday. Best wishes.

get yourself a new clutch cable and lube it well and you should be fine.  Good luck!  You may still have some riding in you this season.

Michel, man that's a bad one. I hope your able to dodge the amputation.
Here's hoping for a speedy recovery too!

Just the other day I was thinking a conversion to a hydraulic clutch might be doable on
the old Hondas. Might be something to check into then you can operate much more easily.

Best and again hoping for a speedy recovery.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

Having amputated the end of my thumb in a table saw, I can sympathize with your pain.

You'll return to a properly functioning person soon.

I hope you get to keep your fingers.

All the best-

Ben

About the only thing I could add is:

It wouldn't have happened if you'd have been wearing suspenders! ;D

I hope all goes well Monday.

A famous spanish actor was asked once how he decided about his profession. He said something in the line of "well, my dad was a carpenter, and the only thing I knew is that I didn't want to be one, because he and all the other carpenters I knew had some fingers amputated".

I remember the quote very well because when I was a kid, a carpenter came home to install some wooden doors and the vision of that hand without two fingers struck me.

At least your new employer is being cool.

Having a recent hand injury myself, my advice is keep active -helps keep your spirits up, count your blessings -it could have been worse and there are lots of people with bigger problems, remember doctors hedge their bets -I know too many people doctors told would never heal that have healed to the point you'd never know anything happened.  My dad was told he'd never walk again -walks just fine now.

I hope today brings good news for you.  Keep us posted.  We're pulling for you.

dr. is letting me keep all fingers for 2 more weeks, maybe. i think he is hedging his bets. says it wiill all depend on how they heal up, but one finger has almost no muscle left.....damn! employer is really graet.

at least i don't have to be taking the Mossburg 12 gauge to the beavers ::) very hard to hold anything using just one hand.

Hang in there! Having used borrowed splitters over the years, I can see how something similar could happen to me as well. I hope you heal up with all digits intact!

Best wishes on a quick and full recovery!

I got my foot crushed in a motorcycle accident about 10 years ago.  One doctor wanted to amputate half of my foot, so I went and found another doctor that had a wait and see approach.  I ended up losing only about a quarter inch of my big toe.  I was amazed at how well I healed up without ever getting a stitch or any surgery.

The moral is...don't rush into any drastic surgical solutions.  Go get a second opinion and see a hand specialist.  If it isn't infected, there is no reason to go cutting into it.

Good luck!

I cut off the last inch of two fingers on my left hand in 1978 during an epic brain fart.  I stuck them back on, held them there and went to the emergency room.  The doc sewed them back on and told me they were unlikely to take.  But they did and are 100% all these years later except for a little bit of numbness in one.  I was lucky and I wish you the same kind of luck.

+1 on that, michel. Nothing like that has happened to me, but bungholio reminded me of someone I know who went through what he did. That is, the guy I know almost lost a finger, but kept it because he saw another doctor.

Hang in there.
