400 mile total trip
« on: September 09, 2005, 09:21:41 PM »
So next weekend I will be riding my 81 CB650 Custom from Albuquerque, NM to Ruidoso, NM for the largest bike rally in New Mexico. The bike is running ok, Somedays it runs great, some days not. I ride it 30 miles everyday for school and work. I just put a new seat cover on it and the bike is in great shape cosmetically, I am taking it down to get new tires tomorrow and possibly new brake pads. It still has the original tires from 81(yikes). So I cleaned the carbs a little while ago, im gonna strap a little 1 gal tank to the back just in case, and Im gonna change the oil. The bike only has 7800 miles on it, it had 6400 when i bought it. anything else i should do this week?

so i got my tires today, dunlop d404's. they look good and i got tires and installation for a total of 196 at the local bike shop. I thought that was good. I also decided to give my bike a "bafflectomy". i drilled holes in the end caps of the exhuast. Holy #$%*, its so much louder. I think i am just gonna try to cut that plate off. Anyone done this before?

I think you'll find that people who travel many miles have quiet pipes for a reason. "Holy #$%*, it's so much louder" is OK for bar hopping, but that extra noise wheres you out on a long trip.

Unless you're putting water in that tank- LEAVE IT HOME! There's plenty of places to get gas around there.

120 miles per gallon? Wow. That's the best mileage I've ever heard of for any Honda.

Go to a shoe show and perhaps you'll hum a "tune".
Tuning. What does a piano tuner do? A good tuner can count the vibrations made for certain notes and won't need a pitch pipe or tuning fork. Each string vibrates a certin number of times according to the note it's supposed to make. Too many vibes or too few, and that string is out if pitch- or tune.
When you've adjusted all your bikes variables so it hums just right, you've properly tuned it.

If I had to guess, 2000 RPMs would probably be around middle C, 440 Hz.

I've been venturing out bit by bit on my bike. 45 miles to the school where I work. made a 100Mi RTdown into New York State.( next day, both throttle cables broke in the school parking lot)

I'm riding on Low-budget Chenshin tires (put 'em on myself), but I plan to upgrade these and shocks this winter. the tech post
on  shocks was helpful, I may replace these too along with rings and lower end gaskets.

...I'd love to be able to enjoy a ride down into NYC...

left yesterday morning at 6am.  at the first gas stop i put the helmet in the helmet lock while i fueled then pushed the bike out of the way for others to use the pump.  when i got back out, just the simple pushing made the helmet get all scuffed up from the tire especially the face shield (my helmet is now crap!)  rode to san isabel with a big scuff right in my line of sight!  but, i am getting a new helmet on tuesday and will try to find a new shield for the old one.  was a good ride, many twisties, a little windy in the high country though.  locked up the rear brake at 90mph to slow down for a cop  :o  spent 40 dollars in one day on gas  :o :o  my eyes feel like this from airflow  :o :o  they are so bloodshot today!  lot's of visine i guess.  was a good ride :)
