success, finally!
« on: September 17, 2005, 01:23:58 PM »
After months of asking questions and sticking with it, I had my first decent ride today! What a feeling. In July, the bike was not running at all. Over the past two months, I got it to where it would run, but run poorly. Two tired, I resynched the carbs again today and played with the spark advance plate and voila! This morning it was bogging out at 20 mph as it has since I got it running. This afternoon, I tweaked some more and took it down the street. Damned if it didn't wind out at first, allowing me to slip through the gears until I was doing 50 mph! What a smooth engine the CB offers. My 2000 Shadow (daily commuter) doesn't feel as smooth. Just a whole different kind of ride. Now that it's running properly, I want to paint the tank and side covers. That was the deal I made with myself. From what I've been reading, acrylic sounds like it's relatively easy. I'm going with the traditional black, I guess. Nothing can put me in a bad mood today. I actually brought the bike back to life. Hooray for me....

The more I learn about these bikes, the more I know I still have to learn. Still, I feel sort of like an semi-expert now. I took another spin around the block and just couldn't get over the ride this 550 gives. All my guy neighbors who have stood over me slugging beer and making suggestions are mighty surprised that I pulled it off. Now I can start working on the fun stuff, such as a real paint job. Thanks again for your patience.
