What causes this? Pic attached

While investigating a leak under the left side cover, I found this. The front sprocket/chain is apparently making contact where the clutch cable attaches, which I just can't imagine is a good thing. Any ideas of what I might need to fix/replace (besides the leaky seal)? Thanks in advance.

I saw this on my CB500.  I replaced the chain with a new O ring chain with a removable link.  The shafts on the removable link are a little longer and they contacted the cable attachment part.  Got a chain riveter and a new link and fixed the problem.  The same situation may apply to a standard chain.

It may also be caused by a shortened clutch push rod.
As they wear they become shorter.
The cable cinch is crashing into the chain because it has to
be adjusted too far out to compensate for the worn push rod.

Ball bearing? Never saw one. That missing or the rod being worn would definitley cause this problem. Thanks for the all of the tips so far. I'll report back next chance I get to inspect it.

OK, here's what I've found. The ball bearing is in place. Here are some pictures of both ends of the push rod; it kind of looks broken off to me.
