Hi all! I was hoping to get some help figuring this out.
« on: August 25, 2008, 12:30:10 PM »
I have a 77 CB550F and I am trying to figure out what size the tires are.  I know what I have found on the web....Front 3.25x19 and the Rear (i think) is 3.78

I cannot figure out how to convert this to the modern style of sizing.  I apologize for such a amateur question, but I am just starting to get into this stuff.  Thanks in advance for any help.

This might help.

http://www.steelthundercc.com/tiresizes.html

Did you do a search here on the forums?  We've had so many tire discussions, I can't believe there isn't something on this.

I recall Dennis Kirk had a good link called Tire Sizes Explained, or some such.

Found it: http://www.dkebay.com/jsp/tpl/tire/tiresizeexplain.jsp

Front is 3.25x19, rear is 3.75x18 (<--- this last one is hard to find, but 4.00x18 works fine.)

You don't have to convert to "modern" sizing.  Dunlop, Continental, Metzler, and (just to be thorough) Chen Shin all make the inch sizes that fit the rim properly and have the proper aspect ratio.

For example, I use Metzler Lasertec 3.25 x 19 front and Metzler ME 77 4.00 18 on the rear of my 550Fs.   They work quite well!  These are tubless tires with tubes installed in them.

One more thing.  The 550F only has 1.85 inch rim width.  This limits the tire width that works well with it.

   Don't forget Pirelli ;) :)

I didn't know Pirrelli made inch size tires.  Their web site is so unfriendly I can't find inch size tires on it.   The pull down menus don't work for me.
