oil out of the breather tube?
« on: August 25, 2008, 06:45:42 PM »
I have a 1976 cb550 and the PO put a small Air Filter looking thing on the breather tube hole, and it's dripping oil at the moment.  Could this be because of too much oil in the engine?  I have an oil leak and i think i've added too much oil when refilling it, so just making sure that this is the cause of the oil leaking out of the breather tube.

thanks!

jason

Some blowby is expected, that is why the breather pipe/hose is there and routed behind and below the engine.  The little breather filter looks nice but oil vapor (blowby) condenses back into oil.  Where is it to go?  Drip Drip Drip.   Replace the filter with the proper oil resistant hose.  Now if blowby is excessive you may have other problems.

Re read you post and realized there was more there than I first absorbed.  If you think you overfilled the crankcase then you could either drain and refill it, or use a squeeze bulb and pull some out from the dipstick hole.  Either way I have never heard of damage from a little overfill.
