cb550 brake question?

have a brake pad stuck in the caliper (piston side).  Any ideas or tricks to get it out.  it has no play what so ever.  anything would be great.

I've just moved this from Tricks & Tips as it is a question. However, we do get this one a lot.

Anyone care to write up a solution and I'll put it in the FAQs (pics would be good too)

Short answer is leave the bleed nipple in and remove the end fitting froma grease gun, preferably with flexible pipe, and the leine witll screw a couple of turns into the pipe fitting hole.

DO NOT FORCE IT OR USE BIG SPANNER AS THE THREADS ARE DIFFERENT!!!

You can then use the grease gun to pump out the oiston and pad then clean out all the grease and the corrosion in the seal groove, fit new seal and good piston


Steve, if any body has a bad caliper to send me i will do a how to with photo's but all mine are in bits. If the bleeder is bust i will also do the adaptor conversion for the £5 it cost for the adaptor.

Hi Bryan.

The three most common methods for removing stuck pistons and/or pads are:
1. Pump using existing brake fluid
2. Pump using a grease gun
3. Pump using compressed air

An intelligent "pros and cons" write-up would be good (rather that "my mate did this"-type replies.

Maybe Lloyd has some thoughts on this?

I used compressed air.
Pull the caliper off the bike, bolt it back together, place a wad of rags where the disc would be and then apply your air blower to the brake hose hole (leave the bleeder nipple in place and an air blower with a rubber tip helps the seal)

If you just have the caliper on the bench and it's not hooked up to the master, then air is a good choice. But 100-200psi ain't beans compared to the 1000+psi you'll be building with the master cylinder.

If the caliper is still on the bike, you're not going to easily get more pressure behind the caliper than by working the brake lever... of course if your master is shot then thats when the grease-gun comes in handy.

Just make sure to clean that up GOOD.

If you're just saying that the PAD is stuck in the caliper, then just try pumping the brake a few times to push it out...
