Paul Newman's last lap.
« on: August 30, 2008, 12:43:52 AM »
Just stumbled upon this grim news. I had hoped to be at Lime Rock's Vintage Fest this Labor Day weekend (Aug 29- Sept 1) but cannot. Beautiful track and PN is a fixture there. An icon he is.  :-\

Don't know what to say but sometimes there is bad news that I'd prefer not to hear.
Paul is the man and I will hate to hear of his passing.

DAMN
What a shame, he was one of the good guys.
I knew of his racing and charitable works and thought a lot of him.
I hope its painless when it comes.

I'm with ya on Cool Hand Luke. Torn Curtain- Hitchcock, Hud, etc...

I tend to not agree with his politics but that man has a special place in Heaven for having such a big heart. His marriage has beaten the Hollywood odds so that says something about the both of them IMO.

I hear ya Rocking-M, but there has been a rumor buzzing for a while he may be sick and since he's so private of a guy (respectable that) this seems to be the first confirmation of it.

I think it speaks volumes that Lime Rock shut down for a local boy whose given so much and to him who seems to identify more with racing than the glamor of acting.

Many years ago I was standing outside a small Playhouse in Ct. I knew someone who had a part in the play. While I was waiting for her I was having a smoke out in the parking lot. A guy walks up to me and asks to bum and smoke. I take one look and he smiles and says, yeah it's me. We talked for a few minutes and he seemed very regular and down to earth. Sad news indeed.

While I'm not a big fan of his movies, I am a fan of the man.  Family, philanthropy, racing and living his life quietly.  He will be missed more than those who seek publicity and the limelight.

This is a story my sister passed along to me today and thought it appropriate to post here.

Paul Newman

Only women of a certain era will fully appreciate this... True story.
(If you don't understand this, tell your mother, she'll get it!)

A Michigan woman and her family were vacationing in a small New England  town where
Paul Newman and his family often visited.

One Sunday morning, the woman got up early to take a long walk. After a brisk five-mile hike,
she decided to treat herself to a double-dip chocolate ice cream cone.

She hopped in the car, drove to the center of the village and went straight
to the combination bakery/ice cream parlor.

There was only one other patron in the store:
Paul Newman, sitting at the counter having a doughnut and coffee.

The woman's heart skipped a beat as her eyes made contact with those famous baby-blue eyes.

The actor nodded graciously and the star struck woman smiled demurely.

Pull yourself together!  She chides herself. You're a happily married woman with three children,
you're forty-five years old, not a teenager!

The clerk filled her order and she took the double-dip chocolate ice cream cone in one hand and her
change in the other. Then she went out the door, avoiding even a glance in Paul Newman's direction.

When she reached her car, she realized that she had a handful of change but her other hand was empty.
Where's my ice cream cone?  Did I leave it in the store? Back into the shop she went, expecting to see the
cone still in the clerk's hand or in a holder on
the counter or something! No ice cream cone was in sight..

With that, she happened to look over at Paul Newman.
His face broke into his familiar, warm, friendly grin and he said to the woman,

"You put it in your purse"

That's sad news indeed, he's done well to make it to 83 considering his lifestyle so we shouldn't be too sad, as Dr Suess said, "Don't be sad that it's over, be happy that it happened".

Like so many great actors before him, I'm happy to have witnessed his art, and stories like Bobby's and Ecosse's put's a human face on a living legend.

May Paul be in heaven half an hour before the devil know's he's dead.  ;)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Aye! I'll drink to that!

He was a class act for sure. Not too many like that today that I'd put up against the likes of him, or Steve McQueen or Lee Marvin or any of the other larger than life big men I grew up watching.

A fun and educating thing I like to do is to Google some of the old Hollywood actors for their bio.

Lee Marvin was one I did recently and...wow! These guys were/are real men! George Clooney who?

Man, I just remembered I have Slap Shot in my DVD collection! I heard it is one of PN's favorites of his own work... if y'all haven't seen it, GET IT!

It's 2 am, I have a bottle of JB and that movie calling me... ;)
