I just wanted to ride again...

This is my project. 76 CB550F with 23K on this set of guages(?) PO wanted a ride besides his 'busa and drag bikes.(Must be nice to work for Roush Industries) He put another harness from a parts bike on it to get it to start, then gave up. 450USD on CL, and here we are.

The handlebars are most definitely NOT stock type.

I agree with your assessment.  They are likely mounted that way because of master cylinder mounting issues.

Keep at it.  You'll have a fun bike!

Those ARE clubmans, and they are flipped over.  PO probably wasn't comfortable on them and flipped them over, shouldn't be any clearance issues w/ the master.

Nice start, you must live in a fairly good neighbourhood, if I did that to my bike half the parts would go walk about with the little horrors that lurk around my street.
I can agree with your need to "just want a bike again" I've sold many over the years to cover bills, school fees, buy a house etc and its only now I'm in my 50's that I can say "hey I want to do a bike and keep it just for me".
Best of luck with your project my friend, may it all go smoothly for you and get you back out to the freedom of two wheels again...........Hush. :)

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Most of my 550s have that head weep to some degree.  I just can't see the justification of taking apart a perfectly good running engine and the expense of a gasket kit, for a few drops of oil.  Clean yours off and see how bad the leak is.  I'd rather wipe it off once a month/week than rip the lid off the engine to replace 2 small orings in the oil passage.  When they drip on your clothes, then it's time.

I admit, I have one that looks like yours.  But, I haven't cleaned it off for a year.  Busy doing other things. :-[

Maybe owning a Brit bike all those years ago, has desensitized my oil drip horror response. ::)

I'm with TT on this, the only oil you need to worry about is the stuff in the sump that the PO forgot to change and that all important but often neglected oil filter.
Oh yeah and taking off the sump to check the crud in there is usually a learning experience for new owners, but a great start to keeping your engine in good nick. ;D

Yeah, some days I can't decide between wrenching on one of my (for sale) bikes, or going for a ride. It can be a tough choice! Better therapy is hard to find, and probably costs a LOT more...  ::)

How far off going for a ride are you now John?
Just idle interest as my 650 is parked awaiting love attention and money in my garage.
Not sure why your seat wouldn't fit, stock pan should have dropped right in, obviously I need pictures. ;D
