Carb cleaners
« on: April 13, 2005, 01:57:58 AM »
I have read about the Yamaha carb cleaner in severeal topics in the past, and I wonder how good it works compared to other cleaners.
A friend in USA shipped a bottle of SeaFoam a while back, it can't be bought here in Norway, and I wonder how the SeaFoam works compared to the Yamaha carb cleaner?
Have anyone tried both?

The Yamaha cleaner is the best carb cleaning product I have ever used and I've tried just about all of them.

I am interested in obtaining this Yamaha Carb Cleaner.  I contacted my  local Yamaha dealer... they don't stock it.  Any suggestions?    or an equally good cleaner.  My CB550 carbs are acting up and I'd like to eliminate dirty carbs as a variable  thanks  Tim

They should be able to order it for you- I can get the part# if you need it. If they won't order it(because they suck) let me know- I can ship you some.

if it's no bother to get the part number  I'd like it.  I have to special order a few parts for my GT550 also.  My dealer is a Suzuki/Yamaha guy.    Thanks  Tim

I have run one fuel tank with an amount of SeaFoam, and it seems to have an effect. There was a lot of dirt in the inline fuel filter. :)

Here in Iowa, all the farmers, truckers and motorcyclists swear by Seafoam....I used it thru my 78 CB550....improved idle and reduced RPM's at speed with the engine running cleaning and smoother...just my opinion though...

I've only ever used Seafoam in my Jeeps, but I don't see why it wouldn't work great in a bike. My father tried running it thru his '80 CB650, but he has too much varnish, and the pilot jets are completely occluded... gotta pick up a set of O/A tip reamers.
Ditto on the Yamaha Carb Cleaner- that stuff ROCKS! One thing to beware, though- it WILL eat through latex gloves, so either invest in nitrile gloves or keep a bottle of Gojo and some skin moisturizer near-to-hand; you'll want to clean that stuff off as soon as you get it on. Also, it's none too kind to either aluminum OR steel- I stored mine in a spare-paint can, and opened it some months later to find most of it gone- it ate thru the liner of the can, then corroded the can in several spots to create pinholes right thru! It then leaked out onto the shelf, it was quite bizarre. And it WILL etch alu if you leave it in there too long, so keep an eye on it, this stuff works FAST.

where do you guys get Seafoam?  I just came back from both Pep Boys and  Advanced Auto..... no dice.  If I have no luck, I'll go to my Yamaha dealer to see if they can order the Yamaha cleaner.  They don't stock it.

I just picked up a can today at my local NAPA Auto Parts dealer (Lititz Auto Parts).  I think it was $6.50 for the can.  Also check boat dealers.

I don't know about Seafoam but Yanaha Carb Cleaner will not harm any rubber or plastic parts.  I use it full strength when I diassemble carbs for cleaning and it works great.
