Valve Cover Gasket Install ('78 CB750F)
« on: August 27, 2008, 10:14:05 AM »
Hi All,

This is probably an obvious question...but I didn't see it discussed directly in any of the valve cover gasket posts.

Does the fiber valve cover gasket get installed "dry" or it is good practice to use some sort of gasket sealant?

Want to do this the right way once...well I guess the right way would be to pull the engine, but that isn't going to happen right now. ;)

Thanks in advance for the assist.

Jay

I use a very light coating of RTV Silicone ultra black.  Little to none should squeeze out as you torque up.  What squeezes outside is also squeezing inside and may fall off to migrate to unwanted parts of the oil system. Honda used what appears to be a form of Indian Head gasket shellac on many engine parts.  It is brown and allowed to dry before installation.  I have used it with good success on engine cases and the like.
