Can someone explain how and why you have to check your float bowl levels?? I was told to let the gas drain out to releive any gunk but i am unsure about levels????I checked out the hint on this page about melting the pvc tubing to check the levels but am unsure why.....on me honda cb 550f???  and my other question was, how easy is it to clean your carbs yourself??? no experience ??   thanks

Re-read the "melt the PVC" thread.  The purpose of melting the tube is so that you can taper it, thus enabling you to screw the tubing into the float bowl drain port (after removing the drain screw of course :) ).  You then hold the other end of the tube up, above the carb (in a sort of J shape), and turn on the fuel.  Fuel will rise in the tube and stop at the same level as the fuel inside the float bowl.  The fuel level should be just below the float bowl mating surface.

Note that this is just a "spot check" procedure, if you need to adjust the level you'll need to pull the bowl and set it with a gauge or other measuring device.  Actually adjusting the float level pretty much means you'd have to pull the carbs off the bike, but the spot check can be done without dismounting the rack.

Finally, if you have the sort of carbs that drain through the overflow spigots when you loosen the drain screw, no need to taper the tubing, just hook up to the overflow spigots and proceed as above.

cheers

Does anyone have the fuel levels for various Honda's?
Kawasaki is the only manufacturer I remember giving fuel levels ( and some of them didn't give a float height which really sucked when adjusting floats)

Which particular model do you need to know about??
That info is invariably given in the Shop Manuals.
I have a large collection (of manuals), might be able to give you what you need, if you tell me a model(s).

I would love info on a CB750K4 ?  I posted on this a while ago but never got an answer, seems the info isn't that readily available.

It was just a general question, I don't remember ever seeing a fuel level in any Honda manual from 70's or 80's

When observing the actual fuel level in the bowls with the clear tubing, you are mostly looking for consistency.   You should first set the float levels to spec using standard measuring / bending procedure and then follow this with the tubing "reality check."  If the tubing readings are the same then you can be sure that your floats are both adjusted correctly and in good shape.  Inconsistent readings either means your measuring techniques were poor and inconsistent or something in the float / needle / seat / pivot system is amiss. . . . I guess if the measuring technique for the float level was done incorrectly but consistently, it would be possible to get the same tubing readings across the board but with a float level that is too high or low, so knowing the proper way to measure is important . . .On my 78's carbs (on which the tubing can be directly connected to the overflow nubs) the fuel level is at or just slightly below the bowl to carb body seam.

My CB750 K1-K4 Supplement shows 26mm, in two different places. .

Is that a fuel level spec or a float level spec??  He wanted to know if there was a spec for the actual level of fuel in bowls which could be confirmed with the use of the clear tubing technique.

 That's float level.
Honda are pretty arrogant about a few things that I have first hand experience of.
Their engineers say that if the float level is correct the fuel level must also be correct (and, if its charging at 13.5V the amperage must also be correct-yeah, right)
Last couple of years they revised that and now say to use ammeer and volmeer
