Headless car audio?
« on: August 29, 2008, 05:21:51 AM »
I've got this old Volvo that I want to use as my other ride.  It's got some issues, including no tunes.  I'm an iPod person, so I'm not interested in FM radio or swapping out CD's.  I know there are receivers with aux input for MP3 players, but what about a system with no head unit at all?  Just iPod to amp to speakers?  I ask because I'm a frugal parsimonious bastard, and also because I have nowhere to park but on the street, so anything of value in my car will be stolen.  TIA for replies.
BTW, she's an SOHC4!
Whoops! How do I shut off the bold?

A lot of amps have line-level aux inputs that accept RCA plugs, so you should just be able to get the correct cable from Radio Shack or somewhere similar and plug it in.

Some heads, like my Sony, have IPod specific plugs that give you control over your IPod using a remote control, and the info that is on the IPod window shows up on the heads display.

And yes, I said remote control.  I thought it was goofy at first, too.  But it seems natural now.  And other things also.  Like I got the HD radio add-on box.  Way cool if you have the programming in your area.  And a USB plug on the front as well as a aux input.  So I can put mp3s on a flash drive to listen to, I can plug in an IPod and my Palm Pilot all at the same time and switch between all functions with a push of a button.

I had a friend try to push a remote-control head unit on me when I was looking at a new iPod friendly stereo.

The whole point of an iPod Touch is the super cool and easy-to-use interface.  So for me, the remote control feature was a turn-off.

Mystic is correct though, if you want an amp-only unit, just get one with an RCA input and get (or make) a cable that goes RCA male-headphone jack (1/8" male).
