Yet another 550 electrical problem....
« on: August 30, 2008, 02:55:18 PM »
I thought I had the wiring right on my '76 CB550F. Listened to Hondaman and found 1034 bulbs to replace the 1157 in my taillight, switched to a halogen front, and found the hi/low switch to be corroded and the spring broken in it. Disassembled, cleaned, and replaced spring. Switch felt like new, headlight worked, Hi and Lo, turn signals, tail/brake functions, just no horn. As soon as I mounted the assembly, it grounds to the handlebars and I blow my headlight fuse instantly, but my horn works. Wrapped the bar with elec. tape EXCEPT the outer collars (for case ground) on the possibility something else was grounding that shouldn't inside. No difference. Everything works except the headlight. Turn on key, blow fuse immediately. What am I missing? I should never have quit smoking cigarettes last week, my patience for diagnostics is deteriorating rapidly. I want to replace the fuses, got new holders for chip type, but this MUST be rectified first.

Were you blowing fuses before you rebuilt your switch? If the headlight fuse blows as soon as your turning the key i would guess its a problem with the power feed between your ignition switch and your headlight switch.
When these things start to get to you its easy to miss the obvious (guilty as charged here ;) ;D) open up your headlight switch and check it again, it could be a stray strand of wire or you may have pinched a wire breaking the coating.
Just my two cents worth, hope it helps.

If a wire got swapped in the switch that could be your problem. I noticed when I put my switch back together that the metal plates that old the wiring in place are a little unnerving, could those be the culprit? Perhaps they pinched a wire.
