750F3 Counter Shaft Bearing Holder
« on: August 31, 2008, 03:19:29 PM »
Well as the title indicates, I am having a hell of a time removing the four 6MM X 20MM flat head machine screws that are holding the Counter Shaft Bearing Holder on my 78 F3 750. I first found the perfect fit philips head screwdriver to ensure correct screw head/tool fit. But all of them seam to be extremely soft mild steel and are starting to deform. I got one out using the method of first tapping the screw head, but the remaining 3 I feel will require drill and a screw removing tool...

Any suggestions from the peanut gallery? Similar issues or problems? Besides a couple of my head studs these are the first screws I have even slightly damaged while trying to remove.

Don't break an ez-out in them like I did, they are really hard to drill.

soak them with pb blaster for several days, tap them periodically with a hammer.  One day, they'll surprise the Hell out of you, and come out...

Are you using an impact driver---its the only way

I tried with both impact driver and drive thru philips screwdriver and made it a lot worse with both. Take it down to your nearest engineering shop and have them drill the screws out and re-tap the threads. Will cost you a bit but seems to be the safest option.

Impact driver is a yes... My biggest surprise was seeing how soft the original screw material is. Especially for a screw that size?

I'm going to Sears today and will pick up a set of extractors.

I broke an extractor off in mine.  The one you'll use is a very small diameter.  Use a lot of PB Blaster first, over a day or two.  I went through 2 or 3 bits, trying to drill out the broken extractor, but never did.  It's my opinion that the 4 or 5 days of repeated soakings with PB and the vibration from the drill finally got it loose.  I cut a slot across the head with a dremel just big enough to put a flat blade screw driver into, and it came out like it was never siezed.  Just be carefull with the extractor.

And... Good Luck
