I've had a bike most of my life, but I've never had one that had a separate oil tank.
I've just gotten this from my pop, He's took this on a trade, like 6 yrs ago, rode it 4 times down the road, then parked it.
I've just changed the oil, pulled the wires, and turned it over. I'm thinking the oil pump will pull the oil back into the crank case.
I've only got 2 quarts in the reserve tank, and I can't get it to take more....Please enlighten me!   I'm ready to ride......

there are two pumps, one pumps the oil through the motor, and the other pumps it back to the oil tank.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

Remove one of the adjustment caps on the cam cover and pour the oil in (slowly).

Did you drain the crankcase as well as the oil tank? If not there's likely some oil down there already. If you did drain it, adding through a tappet cap is the way to go. Put a bit less that the specified amount of oil in (total of the tank and sump), start and run the bike until the engine is fairly hot (maybe 5 minutes?) then shut down and check the tank level, top it up as required. Too much oil will overflow from the tank and make a nasty mess, a bit too little shouldn't be a problem but you can open the oil tank and look in with a flashlight once the engine is running: if all is well you see turbulence from the return oil coming in... if the level just drops out of sight you have a problem with the scavenger pumping.

Also, if you drained the engine first, did you have the bike level....on the center stand?  Side stand tends to pool oil into the left side and not drain out.

Yep, bike level, oil pumping, all is go....I took her out for a spin on Sun. Pretty loud with out baffles. I think I'll give Jc Whitney a call for that. I need to adjust the cam chain.
The darn screws are nailed down tight. I'll need to buy a impact to get them loose. :P Scoot
