Tie-down Advice
« on: August 31, 2008, 11:52:19 PM »
I getting ready to pick up a CB550, and I'm looking for some guidance for how to best tie-down for a 400 mile trip on a three rail trailer.

I've trailered a lot of vintage Vespas with Canyon Dancers, but I hear that a lot of people don't like them for this sized motorcycle.

And how best to secure the rear?

Thanks for any tips or links.

How I do it is ratchet straps from the handlebars pulling Down-Sideways-Front. Ratchet till the forks compress just a litlle depending on how stiff the suspension is (softer forks will require more tension), remember the straps will tense more when you tighten the rear straps.

Ratchet straps in the rear from the grab bar or other suitable point pulling Down-Sideways-Rear. Ratchet till the bike feels firmly planted.

It's important that the front straps pull forward and the rear straps pull back or your bike will come loose.

I do the above, plus a small strap through the bottom of the wheel and around the trailer tongue for insurance. After 25 miles stop and check all of the strap tension (I used to drive flatbed truck  ;D). You should be able to haul it clear across the country.
