This Nullifies My Air Filter. And it makes me sad.
« on: September 01, 2008, 11:13:51 AM »
Two items in question:

1) The metal tube that extends out of the air filter box, towards the engine.

2) The plastic box that the carbs connect to.

It seems like item (1) should extend all the way into item (2) and probably have some sort of gasket around it. Mine does not, as you can see in the pictures. The gap is actually a bit larger than it looks. There's no way all of my air is getting safely filtered. Can somebody clarify for me how this SHOULD be?

Thanks!

Looks like a 350 or 400.

There should be a rubber piece there.

Just went out to double check on my 350. Deffinitely missing the rubber piece.

Yup - 350 (says so in my signature). Anyone know what that rubber piece might be called so I can order one?

Do you have a #3 that pushes the filter forward?

It looks more like the rubber seal that is part of the airbox (#15)is gone - along with clamp #13.

You think it should be pushed in further TT? iam kinda learning towards that since the detail doesn't show anything there.

I've not seen a 350 Four in that detail.  But, I would look to see what stops it from moving that cone of rubber towards the seal.

Cheers,

What. The heck.

I just went out and pulled some parts off. Attached are more pictures.

#5 & #6 are definitely on there. #13 is not, but I have no idea why it would be, because I don't see what it would join #5 to.

Anyone out there with a 350f able to see what they have?

Thanks,
Adam

btw I do have #3, but even if I didn't it wouldn't matter. All of this is part of the air box, the filter simply sits inside it.

The # 3 in the diagram forces the filter to seat against the front of the airbox.  You definitely need this part.

i believe your part is actually part of the intake manifold... the 1 into 4 part.  since i don't see the part on the fiche, that is my guess.

fairly fragile part and they end up glued back together or just plain missing over time.  good luck.

p.s... thanks for making me check my filter... looks dirty and in need of replacement.   ;)

Yup, that's it. Mystery solved. You can see it in Mark's picture, compared to the picture of my 4-1 box. I think you can even make out glue reside in my picture :)

So that part isn't removable? It's supposed to be permanently connected to the 4-1?

As a former parts guy, I can tell you that the part in question is definitely not on the fiche pic.  I don't mean to state the obvious, but it is a little busy in that pic.  And it wouldn't be on another page either.  My guess is that it's not available separately.

Looks like if you get another #6 turn it around and clamped on would fix the problem.
