Antique license plate from Delaware
« on: August 14, 2008, 03:20:38 PM »
Would anyone happen to know why I can't auction one off on Ebay?  That's the only restricted state.

I can only offer a couple of guesses......

(a) feEpay doesn't allow current-style plates and Delaware hasn't changed theirs in about forever.....

or..... similar to flEabay restrictions on sales of slot machines due to the myriad of anal state laws regarding possession of same and the site's insistence on compliance with laws .......

(b) DE has some anal state law about their license plates - maybe they remain Property of The State for all Eternity and we're in big trouble for having them. :-X :-X ;)

I had neither the patience nor the bandwidth to extract any enlightening knowledge from the Del. DMV website. :P

Might as well hang it up in the garage and enjoy it. ;D

Happy trails.

Seems weird to me, Unk. Delaware is nutty about low number license plates, which can be handed down from generation to generation, or sold to another party. It would seem that you'd be able to sell one on ebay.

Check out This article about a DE tag that auctioned for $675,000. Or this guy who sells low number DE tags. I think I'll go for the "968" tag for $47,000 with available financing.

Given that some low number tags are handed down, and that the original tags were porcelain, there are cars in DE that have license plates insured for far more than the car itself. That's weird.

I have a steel plate in not-so-hot condition, but I know people collect old plates.  I figure it might be from the 20's.  I read about that one plate -number 6? -that went ofr big money.  Maybe i should try an regular auction here.  I really would be surprised if it was worth more than $20, though.

Maybe I should try a Deleware CL ad.

Thing is, that has to be a state law and if I don't live in that state- who cares?

If I remember correctly from the article, DE was the last state to stop using porcelain for their plates. They switched to steel in 1945. If I'm right, that'd make yours a bit newer than you think. On the other hand, folks do collect old plates. I paid $15 for a 1970?s historical plate for my 750. CL would b a plan.

I'm working on a new theory as to why you cannot sell it on ebay. DE has long had old license plate brokers. Politics in that tiny state are often inbred. Mebbe the brokers somehow "convinced" the state legislature to "protect" them.

Mr Shave, May I assume you mean ceramic COATED as opposed to painted?
I assume this is older than the 40's because it has a similar shape to those of the earlier plates.  It's definitely not stamped.  Looks like the numbers are rivited on.
Mr K7, if you want to turn your friend on to this, by all means.  Otherwise, I guess I'll try a local auction.  I'm dumping my hubcaps and stuff, too.  Simplifying, if you will.  I'm keeping the hood ornaments, though.  I still like them too much.

You could be very right about the broker thing.  Quite nefarious, IMO...

ive got an antique motorcycle tag on my 750. the paperwork states that the antique tag must be surrendered upon sale or transfer of vehicle... new owners can re-apply for antique status once bike passes required state/antique inspection. once tagged as an antique im exempt from future vehicle inspections. i get a renewal notice in the mail, i send check, they mail me new registration sticker!

I've got a weird one on the topic of plates.  My dad somehow waited in line until the same number came up every year, so I've got a ton of tags(I think it's 4 per year -front and back for mom and dad's cars) all with our street address number, 1346, on them from the 60's.
