Go through the electrical system, those connectors get a bit dirty inside over the years, I cleaned each pin of each connector one at a time with a brass bristle brush then applied a coating of dielectric grease, then placed each pin back where it was...lots of notes and sketches will help. Another very important spot is the fuse holder, old solder for some reason will cause a high resistance condition resulting in a fuse with the end caps seperated, a melted fuse holder and maybe a hot blown fuse........the cure to this is simple, pop the fuse clips out of the plastic panel, and heat the solder up with a soldering iron or torch, when the solder melts knock the liquid solder against something and most of that old solder will seperate itself from the wire/fuse clip, careful it's very hot stuff. re-solder the connection and when cool, clean it with the brass brush and apply dielectric grease and reassemble.
Go through the connections in the headlight bucket, look for bad wiring/broken connectors etc. clean and grease each connection.
replace the headlight/directional/brake/idiot light bulbs and flasher relay with new ones.....the idiot light bulbs are #52 not #57 like the books say.
this should get you on the right path to getting the bike back on track.
