Harleys were few and far between when I was in the mood for dragging every set of lights, in my youth you understand.
Here in NZ if you didn't ride Jap you had to have a leaking slow Triumph (totally misnamed bike) and I gloried in thrashing every Trident or Bonneville I could find with my stock Suzuki T350 ha ha. ;D
Harley owners in NZ desperate to get some type of performance from these down tuned monsters ordered 900 Kawasaki points and dumped the electronic slow-down wizardry fitted.
Many of my own generation (thats half a hundred) at work ride Harleys, its like screaming mid-life crisis yet none of them can change a plug and all have "service contracts" with the dealers.
Also of note, you can't park your Harley outside the picture theatre and expect it to be there when you come out cos some low life gang member will have nicked it, old Hondas are pretty safe as it is an art just getting them started ha ha ha.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Steven,

Us Harley guys like to play with our engines just like us Honda guys do.

2003 Fat Boy injected. Was 58hp (dyno specs before) at 88ci. Altitude 6480 ft. Now 84hp/94ftlb at 95ci, cam, intake and exhaust mods, race tuner module and dyno set up.

Have fun but don't make a bet!
88ci. to make 58hp is really very pathetic.  88ci. = 1442cc or like the equivalent to 2.88 CB500's, or 2.62 CB550's, or 1.92 CB750's
Even at 95ci, it's 1940's technology at work, trying to keep up with the rest of the world.  ::)

Yeah Steve F, my stock 2001 Fat Boy got rather anemic at 105mph but it took a damn good head on collision.  :( They put the stock counter balanced Porsche 1450cc engine together for 2 reasons: (1) low HP = more longevity and good fuel mileage (~60-65 mpg) and (2) to sell more engine parts after we bought the bike.  ;)
Luckily the insurance company was happy to settle how I wanted so the engine work on my 2003 was pretty much gratis. Granted, I'm pushing 84 non stock HP and 94ftlb of torque versus a 69/70 750K, a 77/78 750K or a 75/76 750F of 67HP and perhaps 45ftlbs of torque or a mid model 750K of maybe 45HP but the Fat Boy ran like a scalded ass monkey through the Nevada desert at 90mph and 3400rpm all day long 8/17 without a hiccup. Now that would translate into almost 7000rpm on my 750 which I definitely would not do all day due to such things as over heating, head gasket leakage, and excessive vibration (yes, more on the 750). Plus I care for my one owner 33 year old Honda too much to abuse it like that!

Just don't understand why some guys lump all Harleys/Harley riders together. I don't hear anyone belittling Honda riders on here, not even from us Honda AND Harley riders. Us 810 and above riders don't slam the Honda guys that ride the little 500/550 scooters.  :-* (post edit with the emoticon) We're all RIDERS, get over it or get on with your lives.

Hey Ichiban,

I have the 810 tuned in fairly well but when I put it together the last of 3 times I couldn't afford such luxuries as a ported head, bigger jugs, lighter/stronger rods, CR31 carbs, etc. I think a lot of guys can't afford to do much to their ONE bike let alone own 2 or 3. I'd love to fine tune it on a dyno before I make it right with all the above mentioned goodies and the 900 kit just to see where it's truely at. It's kinda hard to compare the 2 bikes without a side by side. 2 totally different beasts. The 810 would have taken my stock 2001 Harley but I wouldn't bet on it taking my 2003. The 200lb weight difference is significant. The 810 really starts to shine above 6500rpm and once it gets above that you don't have time to watch the tach - it's up to 10000rpm in an instant and you'd better know how to shift by sound. However it doesn't have anywhere near the grunt before that whereas the Harley pulls real hard up until it's 6200rpm rev limiter. If you rode over 45mph  ;D ;) I'd let you ride it with me on the Harley. Ha ha.

Ahem...  Wasn't that last sentence a slam?
Further, you might wish to review some older posts in this forum, originating down under, about slamming the little 500/550.  I believe one of the phrases was "girly bike".

There have been slanders from others, too.  Probably ignored by those with "real bikes".  ::)

For a while, their was a definite air to the forum that made it a 750 club primarily, with only some tolerance to "lesser" bike encroachment.  I'm certain the influx of more smaller bike contributors has disgusted many "bigger" more important bike owners, as their post frequency has dwindled.  (Or, perhaps simply diluted with other SOHC4 contributors.)

There is no shortage of bike bigotry here.  There is even belittling between the cafe and stocker crowds, too!

I've looked for a Harley to rebuild for 30 years.  But, they were always overvalued by the seller.  I've gotten far more miles per dollar out of my bikes, than ANY Harley I've encountered for purchase.

TT,

I definitely agree that plenty of bike bigotry (I like that phrase!) exists here. Thats a shame but this is the real world too. This is for the most part a very good forum with a very diverse population. I make every attempt to reread my posts (and edit often) in an attempt to be as impartial and I can. I have no problem with other bikes. As I stated we are all RIDERS and our bikes are as diverse as we are.

Nothing I said was intended to be a slam. I do my best not to approach that area. From my perspective it was a comparative statement meant in jest as opposed to just plain outright Harley slamming. I'm going to go back and edit it with an emoticon as I should have before. We are all Honda riders and some of us just happen to own other bikes also. Whether they are 350s, 400s, 500s, 550s, 650s, 750s, chops, cafes, clunkers, restores, or just plain every day riders it matters not in this scheme of things.
