Wheels & Tires
« on: August 30, 2023, 05:37:32 AM »
I bought a 78 cb750k and have been bringing it back to life it needs a lot of attention to make it safe for the highway again. I have come to the point I need to make a decision on the wheel and tire size I want to use I got a couple of different options the bike came with 2 com.star wheels on it the 19”in front anda16” on the rear, but I also have a 78 cb750A parts bike that has the bright mag wheels with a 19” in front and a 17” on the rear, the tires on all of them are old and dry cracked and have the old tire signing stamped on them like 3.25 19 and a 4.50 17 I don’t recall off the top of my head the sizes on the comstars so if you guys had the choice that I do what wheels and what tire size would y’all pick, To tell you the truth a lot of the tires I see now days don’t even have any tread in the middle just on the sides but from what I read they hold good even on wet roads iv just never had anything like that, Thanks for your help,

I use Kendas on my K7 and 8. They work well. Definitely use the alloy rims on spokes!

Just so you know this will probably be moved to the SOHC Bikes section from the new members section.....

Are you making a rider bike or full restoration?
The new tread design is great handling. I recommend the Bridgestone BT46.
Wheel choice is your decision. The 78K came the wire spoked wheels, 19" front and 17" Rear.
Post pictures of the rims you have.

I bought a 78 cb750k...

When I had my K8, I put Dunlop 404's on it, good tire and fairly priced.  You need to decide what rims you will use as not all tires are available in all sizes.

What Classic Car are you restoring? My current project is a '69 GTO

Thank you for all the replies so far and sorry I posted in the wrong place I tried just a minute after I posted it to figure out how to move it myself but am new to this type of thing  I have never had any type of social media or been a member of anything other than eBay sending an email is just about it for me, I had finally figured out how to introduce myself after looking through the forum for a couple of weeks and I didn’t realize when I started to post the question about wheel and tire size that I was still in the introduction page ,   I am building this bike to ride and as I had mentioned earlier it came with a set of the black comcast style mags on it probably from something like a 1980 750 would have come with, it has a 19” tir on front and a 16” rear, but I also have a stock 1978 cb750 A that I got as a parts bike and it has the original silver mags on it with a 19” front and a 17” rear, both bikes have old tires on them and I have been trying to figure out how to convert the old sizes to the modern metric equivalent I think iv got it figured out if I decided to go with the 17” rear it crossed over to a 130-80 17 or a 130-90-17 I think one is just a little taller, the 16” that is on the bike now looks pretty good but for handling and just all around riding is there a benefit in going to a taller 17” wheel and tire, I found a set of Michelin commander 2s for a pretty good deal in both 16”&17” and with a matching 19 for the front, would they be an all around good tire for the 750, just looks like they’re selling point was mostly for Harley cruisers, Thanks again,

No worries about the fopaw of posting in the wrong place. A mod changed it to the SOHC/4 Bikes (tech section).
Yes the 17" will most likely be a little taller and the same as originally came on the 77/78 K bikes.
If you go to a tire size chart and check the height you can see what the difference will be. Will it make much difference in handling, no a whole lot unless you go an inch taller or shorter.
The Commander 2s are getting long in tooth so check the tire dates so you aren't getting old rubber(5 years rubber hardens and get slippery). I think they are up to Commander 4 now.

Thank you Old timer, I will keep my eye on that last time I had an old hard tire on back of a bike I came around a little turn that stayed damp near an old rock underpass and wound up going down the road on my butt and elbows my buddy turned around came back down the road and said you need me to get off and help you stand that thing back up I was so mad at that point I literally just shook my head and told him that if I needed his help to stand my bike back up I’d just stop riding now 40 years later I would probably have to have somebody to stand me back up..
