1983 550 Nighthawk Alternator Problem
« on: September 03, 2008, 03:37:59 PM »
Hi Group
This afternoon I looked at a friend's 550 Nighthawk. This has it's alternator mounted behind the cylinder block and driven by a chain. It is not charging. He has a Clymer manual for it. The alternator is not charging. The Clymer manual says that the alternator uses a permanent magnet rotor. But the wiring diagram shows a fourth coil. This coil is connected by a black and a white wire. The other three coils have the usual yellow wires. All four coils have 1/2 ohm resistance. The rectifier checks out. The rectifier/voltage regulator has recently been replaced by a local shop. With no change in the alternator's output. What does this fourth coil do? What should it's resistance be? What else should I check?
