Enfine rattle?
« on: September 12, 2005, 02:38:33 AM »
I have a loud rattle on tick over, particularly when the engine is cold. I am not mechanical, but it sounds a bit 'big end' like to me!?
I am told that these bikes make a loud cam rattle, is this true? If so, how can i differentiate between the 2 noises?
The bike is a 76 CB 570 F. It has done 32k miles... Not sure of its recent history..

G'Day Jim, let me get this straight, your CB570's Enfine is rattling? Ha ha, ok, you might be a big bloke so I better stop taking the piss! Stuffed big end or main bearings, while possible,  are pretty uncommon in the mighty CB750 engine, the rattle is more likely either your cam chain, or your clutch/primary chain rattling caused by your carbs being out of "Synch".

If you're a "beginner", take it to a shop and ask if you can watch over the mechanics shoulder, (I used to make coffee for them and give them my cigarettes) some shops won't allow this of course, but some of the smaller shops with only a couple of guys working there will often be happy to teach.

I'm not a good "book learner", so I've found this kind of "hands on" method the easiest to understand, and retain. Good luck with your F1 mate! cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I had a rattle in my '76 CB750F when I first got it, too. What mine turned out to be was an out-of-place spring clip that was supposed to lock second gear into place (when I bought it, the guy said, "If you're really bossin' it, it will pop out of second gear on you..." Wonder why?) This allowed the gear to slid freely on the shaft making an awfull noise when the bike was tilted to one side (and destroying a shift fork in the process).

That's probably not your problem, but I just felt like telling the story

I know this will sound silly, but what does your rattle sound like? Can you determine (within a sqaure foot or so) where the sound is coming from?

Cam chain rattle sounds like shaking a box of loose change, clutch rattle sound more like a box of large nuts and bolts.  I wouldn't be surprised if you were experiencing a little of both.  Give her a tune-up:  valve adjustment, timing, cam chain tension, and then synch the carbs last.  This will most likely solve the problem and give you a nice, smooth idle too.

And even after a full tune up don't be surprised if you still have a little clutch rattle.  My K5 is spot on now and with it in neutral, clutch lever out there is still a little bit of a rattle coming from the clutch area.  Pull the clutch lever in and it goes away.  No big deal.

Thanks for the comments... I have started the bike this morning and the noise seems to be coming from the kick start area, but slightly forward and more in to the middle of the engine.... The sound is more like a heavy knocking noise, like lumps of metal in a washing machine.. When I bought the bike the guy said this bike ( and all CBs) make a loud cam noise??

He wasn't lying Jim, they do. Directly behind the kick starter is the clutch, which is driven off the primary chains from the crank, which drives the cam via the cam chain.

If it's out of tune as described in the above posts, it'll rattle as you've described it. If it continues to rattle under load (when you're accellerating in gear) it may well be something worse, but I'd check all the easy things first before you start tearing it down in anticipation of an (unnecessary) rebuild. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I know someone in Wokingham who'd do it. (about 10 miles for those of you on the other side of the world)

Until recently he ran a small repair shop and did MOT testing. He always admired my 500 / 550 and commented on how easy they were to work on...

He charges ~ £40 per hour.

Bryan,
Thanks for the offer Bryan, but I don't think I can get it to Gloucester!! If you are in my neck of the woods ever, let't meet up for a beer?

Steve,
I will give you a call to get the number of your chap that is local to me.
Thanks to all the others who offered advice. As a novice to the Honda CB world I have found this very helpful....

I was born and raised in Germany where there`s a town 10 minutes drive each way ,now my mailbox is a 10 minute walk.
Mine rattled like crazy and I thought for sure I had main bearing problems but tuned it up and synched the carbs about 4 tries to get it spot on and it purrs. Now that I have the parts bike on the road it`s time to synch it too, nice rainy day for it today.

Tha nice thing about being on a small island is that everyone lives relatively near to you! although, there is only one CB 550 and 1 CB750 within an hour of me.... There must be a lot more around me that are not in to the 'forums'... I was out the other day and saw a yellow F go by but I did not get the chance to stop him and have a chat.
I have already found the forum really useful, thanks again for everyones advice....
Jim.
