"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few" Winston Churchill, about the events of that summer...

And our few cents in that battle.. http://www.geocities.com/psp1945/303/303Squadron.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Royal_Air_Force_aircraft_squadrons#Polish_manned

And a little quote from wikipedia... y'know, I'm Polish...

No. 303 "Kosciuszko" Squadron, which was named after the Polish hero General Tadeusz Kościuszko, claimed the highest number of kills (126) of all the squadrons engaged in the Battle of Britain[citation needed], even though it only joined the combat on August 30 (though the number of claims should be verified down, but claims of the British squadrons were verified down proportionally as well).
Welcome to my mountains!

Theres also a link with General Tadeusz Kościuszko here in australia

At 2228 metres, Mount Kosciuszko is the highest mountain on mainland Australia. It may not be the highest mountain in the world but it is one of the oldest. The Aboriginals called the mountain Tar-Gan-Gil. They visited the area for ceremony, socialising, sharing and trading. The mountain recieved its present name in 1840 when Polish geologist and explorer Count Paul de Strzelecki named it in honour of General Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a Polish patriot and freedom fighter. Strzelecki said the name occurred to him because he was "amongst a free people who appreciate freedom".

There are connections between australia and the whole world, we are home to the biggest bunch of mix breed bastards in the world hehehehehehehe ;)

Good on you Troppo, the real bastards were the "ruling class" that crammed the misfits into other places so they wouldn't have to put up with your ancestors. Buber once upon a time I read an interview with a vet a Squadron Leader who commented on how fiercely the Poles went after the germans in the air and my father in law who was in a tank regiment in Italy figured it was the Poles who took Mt Casino in WW 2, which is why I never understood why there was such a spate of Polish jokes in the States.

This sort of thing is important to me bill, last year on rememberance day i was talking to a bloke at work, he wanted to know why i was so serious about the 11oclock on the 11th of november thing, i told him that it was in respect for the blokes who fought for their countries in all wars, whether they died or not they fought and offered their lives in the attempt.
He simply shook my hand, stood up and walked away. I later learned his grand-father fought and died in the seige of the ghetto in warsaw during WWII. (I hope i got that right).
I kinda feel guilty about that, my grandad was in a restricted job during WWII, so he did his bit in the reserve forces here in aus.
All servicemen, no matter their rank or posting deserve respect and honour.
I ask all that read this post to raise a glass in their honour!

Well, it was that kind of everybody tried to conquest this mountain (US, Canadians, New Zealanders, Gurkhas) But it took stubborn Poles to do it.
Well, we are know for fighting well, but it's much worse when it comes to ruling our own country...  ;D I live here, so I know..  ;)
And jokes? Well, i guess we didn't know how to "joke back"...

My Grandgrand father was a high ranking general in pre WW2 Polish Army, my grandfather was an engineers colonel in WW2, I only served UN in Cambodia - and that'll do for me, thanks!

But (due to my nation history) I have A LOT of respect of heroes of WW2. Sometimes it's a pity that Russians didn't had access to Hollywood - I mean, look how many great movies and stories were done about US troops in Europe - yet it was barely a year of fighting (from DD to victory), and mainly against already weakened troops (best nazi troops were sent to the east front, and anihilated there)  - Russians were fighting nazis since 1942.... There were some great battles with incredible heroism there, but they rest kind-of , unknown...

Too right buber, there were some huge battles, and a lot of great fights. I would love to see a decent movie about the snipers of stalingrad

Buber - Demon - my Dad's boss in the RAF was a Pole who stayed on in the Air Force after the war - his name was Andriefski (spelling?), a Count apparently. He was a good friend to my Dad, who was a young Navigator at the time, so my parents asked him be my Godfather when I came along and spoiled the party!
My father has great respect for the Poles who fought with British forces during the war. There's been a large Polish community in Britain since the war.
We live in Kent and when I was growing up there were always lots of Poles helping pick the Hops and fruit and we often had parties at the end of picking time. My Dad, who used to do the Hopping as well to relive his childhood Hop picking experiences, would make a point of formally thanking all the Poles for their parents' sacrifices in defending Britain against the Nazis.
They used to bring some fierce vodka round to the house - although the higher the alcohol content the better it used to taste for some reason!

We have a major bridge and roadway in New York City named after General Tadeusz Kościuszko.

My Mother in law was deported from Poland after WWII by the Russian puppet Gov't since she was born in the US and was brought back at the age of one.

My Father in Law was in first wave at Normandy.

His Cousin won the Silver Star at the Battle of the Bulge.

The Russians used th Polish Army to keep the rest of the others in line. I think the Russian Army would think twice before going against the Poles.

Sept 15th is 4 days after Sept 11, which is day of rememberence here.

Dedicated to Sgt. Howard Bruckner 1950 - 1969. KIA LONG KHANH.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?
