New Loom for CB750 K3, what will suit?
« on: September 12, 2008, 01:29:16 AM »
Hello,

I'm just starting to get the parts needed to start my project.

I've got a CB750 K3 and can't seem to find a loom specifically labeled K3.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-CB750-CB-750-K2-New-Wire-Loom-Wiring-Harness_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35581QQihZ007QQitemZ170260176516QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD2V

Whilst I know a little about the model differences from a K1-K5, I am certainly no expert and only knowwhat i've picked up in reading on this forum and other websites.

I guess the best question to ask is.

What chassis parts (inc loom etc) are interchangable with the model I have? ???

You need the K3 -K5/K6 loom. The K0/K1/K2 loom wont work with your existing ignition switch.

The K3 has a square ignition block (earlier models had round). The K3 also has the saftey starter clutch - under left sidecover a red plastic box - K3 harness hooks up to this.

Partsnmore I think also sell the K3-K5/K6 harness as does David Silver Spares. Much cheaper than Yamiya  ;)

Good luck
Andy

Andy,

I made a K3 harness work on my K2.  I had to buy a K3 fuse box, but the ignition switch hooked up just fine.  However, I bought a new "round" ignition switch and it plugged right into the harness.

It is amazing the parts that Honda still has in stock.  The fuse box and ignition switch are OEM.  I ordered them at my local shop.  Not inexpensive, but will last 30 years.  You know what is cool - when I am 60, this bike will be 66 years old and I will still be riding it (if we still have gasoline in 30 years :o)

Mine wasn't quite as neat. I spliced in 3 inline fuse holders. I used my old ignition switch, but took the opportunity to lengthen the leads while splicing so it wasn't so tight reaching up to the handlebar mount.  It was late at night...

Thanks for the above.

As mentioned still much to learn.

I've put two photos up.  Hoping that someone can confirm what loom I should buy.
Still not certain...  :-\

Boy, that one's a mess!  :o

Any harness will work on any 750, with the caveats below:
1. The K2-and-earlier harness type has a round ignition key plug. This can be changed, if necessary, like I just did on the HS#1 bike: go to Vintageconnections.com to buy the connector parts.
2. The K3-later bikes had a "safety relay" with a red connector added into the system. This was activated at first by the clutch lever's switch (no starter unless clutch pulled in) and later also by a sidestand switch. Both may be bypassed, if the rider's IQ is more than one digit (this was forced on Honda by Ralph Nader's finegeling with the DOT), and the safety relay can be bypassed as well. If you have this one, PM me at home and I'll try to get some pix together for you, as I'm doing that now to the HS#1 bike, also.
3. Starting at late K3, more than one fuse was used in the fusebox. All models may be converted back to one fuse by joining the two leads at the fusebox, if desired. Earlier harnesses lacked the extra wire of the multi-fuse harness.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

If you want to find out exactly what parts transfer best resource is a parts book as they cover several models and list the difference, also you can be sure you looked up the correct part before ordering instead of trusting the pimply youth with 1/2 a brain cell.

Come up fairly regularly on ebay or you can use

http://www.motogrid.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/7/default.aspx

Look up the part in the parts list then if you input the number into the RH side data it will tell you what models its was used on
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Thank you.

Didn't know of the Motogrid OEM Parts site, that will help alot!

Understand what's meant too regarding skipping certain parts of the electrical system.
I do half at least half a brain and should be able to figure this out.

If not I certainly know the place to come for advice.
